Fallout 4, Preview Analysis.

Fallout 4, preview under the microscope, after many discussions in the news thread and many heated opinions I thought I'd take a look at the preview in detail and a little closer, mainly to try and deduce which engine Bethesda may be using and are those graphics an improvement on the last games in the series, as for the improvements yes there are definite improvements in the models as far as I can see, the model poly counts are obviously greater than those used in FO3 and somewhat similar visually to FO:NV and Skyrim, even the animations namely the way the characters run have a Skyrim feel to them, which only adds to my findings later regarding the possible game engine. It was the way the Dog moved that convinced me in the end, just compare that to the way the foxes and dogs behave in Skyrim and you'll see where I'm coming from.

I've been analyzing the textures, effects and models found in the newly announced Fallout 4 video. As far as I can see there are vast improvements mainly in the Anisotropic Filtering, LoD levels, Tesselation and also fog, now fog wasn't used in Fallout 3 instead they opted for forced perspective and bloom effects, it wasn't introduced (badly) until FO:NV and Skyrim which as we know used the Creation Engine rather than the dated Gamebryo Engine of FO3 and Oblivion.. Which has me believing now that Bethesda are indeed using a new engine and I'm inclined to say it's a modified version of their own in house Creation Engine.

Yes some of the shots are a little ropey and rough around the edges but that is due in part to the video containing nothing more than actual in game footage, which brings me to the next point, the footage we have can in no way be maxed out graphically or the lowest either so that leaves us only medium details across the board which makes sense if you think about it logically when developers have consoles to take into consideration too, if this was deliberate by Bethesda, Kudos to them for not doing the CDProjektRED tactic of showing us the polished goods first then watering it down so not to disappoint "everyone" in the final release.

Anyway lets see what you guys think to my findings, maybe you agree maybe you don't, discuss below and share your thoughts.

Until I see actual gameplay I really want to hold judgement. It'll look fine I think. Not amazing but then again, when did a Bethesda game look good?

It will be interesting to see what they say about the engine being used. I would assume it would be a tuned up version of their Creation engine (and if I recall correctly that is a modified gamebryo engine). I think the biggest giveaway to the engine being used (besides the overall looks) would be to see how the character jumps.
I just don't get why they didn't make the big choice to jump to UE4 and use that. The blueprints, in built physics, texture options, advanced graphics etc would have been fantastic but hey, too much common sense in that idea I guess.

Oblivion was decent at the time, especially with the foliage and all.

I did so much research last night into Bethesda, Zenimax, id, Machinegames, Arkane, Battlecry and Tango Gameworks.

All these devs are subsidiaries of Zenimax Media, they have their own engines, but mainly 2 are used extensively at the moment, Creation Engine being the first and id Tech 5 being the second, id Tech 5 wouldn't work for Fallout 4 as it is not optimised or well suited to vast free roaming environments. As for using UE4 it'd never happen, epic wouldn't allow it.

You are right about the Gamebryo engine being the foundation for Creation Engine, at the recent GDC, Bethsoft said there was nothing left of the original engine it's been modified that much it's a new engine altogether. I'm currently awaiting the white paper for creation engine to put to bed myths about recent changes including TressFX, Hairworks, TXAA and other addon support.. if these are true then we have our Engine set in stone (almost) and we can expect so much more from it in the future.

UE4 is great for tiny games, for large games it's useless without serious modification. It's really not as great as you seem to think it is...

Custom engines built for a specific game are the best way to get optimal performance.

Wow, Creation or Id Tech. That's like choosing how you want to fail :D Although I think Epic would allow the use of their engine as people forget that their number one priority is to sell the engine, not games, plus their games are in a different category and the cost of $850,000 licensing fee has been lifted.

Using 3rd party plugins to support the engine would be good if it works, but from the trailers it doesn't look like they have much support but I guess this all depends on if that video is of an alpha engine or if the game is in beta/coming out for Christmas.

From what I've learned so far the general consensus, it's believed the video is Pre Alpha gameplay using a free cam, what we do know for sure is that it is working ingame code.

nice write up wraith, people i think are freaking out about the graphics far too much myself.

Thanks dude.

I do think most have right to be in that "freaked out" circle (I'm one of them), it's a game we've all waited so patiently for, and with the tosh that EA & Ubisoft has been drumming out and the state of The Elder Scrolls Online, we definitely want more Fallout but we also have high expectations now that in part can be blamed on AAA titles looking so gorgeous so our standards have risen, maybe a little too high. I'd be happy with what I've seen in the video albeit a marginally polished version but I'd be happy none the less.

aye i can see where you're coming from, but bethesda have been really good with their games bar ESO, people should have a little faith in publishers that have earn't it i think ^_^

OK so last night (3:50 this morning *yawn*) I stayed awake to watch Bethesda announce Fallout 4 and just wow! We are really in for a huge game with monumental improvements.

Firstly we were all speculating the Engine used in the demo video, and it has been confirmed it is the new reworked and vastly modified Creation Engine, which just looks amazing I think you'll agree.

Just a few screen blasts from the conference.

Hm, still think it looks pants. I'm playing Last Light Redux and that looks good - this looks meh at best. Also I'm not seeing how the gameplay has changed in the slightest. It does seem like my cynical and pessimistic call was right about this.

you don't see how anything has changed.....did you not watch it or something?

I know I did! At 4:00 this morning my wallet leaped from my desk and tried to rape my screen

Where do I sign?!?!? Can't wait for Nov. 10th, even though I'll probably wait at least a month before buying it.
