[Build Log] Mil-Spec

It seems my SR2 build has drawn some attention and as a result i have been contacted by a guy wanting me to build him a nice gaming rig for his son for Christmas.

So i specced him a nice machine that can play games all day long for a reasonable price.

No watercooling of the custom nature on this one,a H100 is going in as i cant rely on the customer changing fluids etc...he is not an enthusiast of watercooling but he is interested in it so im keeping it simple for now,he can upgrade to a custom loop later....maybe an XSPC D5 Raystorm kit.

So......the specs......

The case is having some minor modding done, panel swap for a clear window with no fan mounts,lights....all your favorites.

This is not going to be a drawn out log, this will be turned around in a week or so.

Nice little gaming rig i think,You?

Only things Id have changed would have been quiet edition fans and the PSU is a bit overkill, even the AX650w would have been fine. That rig would have been fine on a decent 500watter.

I have a feeling that more cards will be added later, once he gets the bug,you know how this all starts Tom.....
As it sits now,the PSU is a bit OTT as you say.

I want my dad to pay someone to build me a nice gaming rig for Christmas...god damn.
Looks good :) If budget's something to be concerned over, i'm all for speccing the PSU to match the other components. However, if money is not a concern...it's not like you can buy a PSU that has an upper power output which is too much

I'd also have swapped the SSD for a Samsung/Crucial, and swapped the HDD for a WD Drive, but that's just my preference on things. Regardless, there's going to be a very happy son at the end of this endeavor.

If the son is not happy, Im sure there are many people here that would happily queue up to kick him in the nuts and inform him how lucky he is!!!!

You are not the first to say that!
One very lucky young man to say the least.

It wont be long coming, around a week after i have done all the case mods and burn everything in.

Looks like it's going to be great. I love the aesthetic of the Sabertooth stuff and the C70 too, should look great with a plain acrylic side panel with no fan mounts.

I cracked on today, this is the case...Corsair C70 in green.
I am a big fan of this case now for the lovely little touches i will show later.

So,this is the case in its empty glory.

I have sprayed the rings yellow, they contrast nicely with the rest of the build and show up well thru the mesh of the case.

Looking good so far!

Wiring tomorrow and the rest of the mods to be done during the week when the acrylic and lights turn up.

Would you like this for Christmas?

Looking good, although it still pains me to see the power connections on the 660Ti.

Shall you be doing any painting of the case itself?

And yes...yes I would.

Looks good. I agree, I really dislike the power pin placement on the 660/670s, not much you can do about that though aside from getting a non reference pcb or something like that. Still not 100% into the corsair fans personally, as I have never liked interchangeable multi colored trim on anything, but nice work with the yellow, it goes very nicely with this and I probably would not have through of painting them yellow! The green corsair ram definitely goes well with this build also, and the sabertooth stuff has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. I wasn't totally in love with the huge heatsink type covering on the z77 model, but Im starting to like it more now. I hope those 2 fans are too noisy though? if they are auto speed controlled like the rampage IV one then I wouldn't even notice.

I just ordered some clear inkjet sticker sheets up for some detail work.

Intake warning stickers and Military ID stickers i think will set it off nicely.
Nothing too over the top mind, just some nice detail bits like the back of fans etc

Got the rig wired up this morning so just the last bits of modding to be done.

Dont mind the fan headers, they are waiting for a controller.

I have asked a few WC manufacturers if they want to get involved by sponsoring a loop, you never know unless you ask!

XD

So,to finish up...

New window with no fan mounts.

Some sort of LED strip light.

Stealth a DVD drive in to it.

Fan controller....im thinking a Bitfenix Recon.

Then its on to the OS install, setup and then a good burn in.
I will bench this rig, will be nice to see what this can squeeze out.

That is a really nice fresh build you got there, my only niggle is the fan grills in the window. i hate it when cases have them !

The window is being replaced once Specialtech gets more plexi in later this week.

I have my modding trousers on today..

What do you think? Too much?

I'd say ask the kid, If he don't like it then keep it for some other project :) Just seen some new PSU's released at scan with a military scheme too :p

He'll love it :)
As long as it doesn't get loud, I see no issue with the cooler. We need to look at this from the perspective of the kid that's getting this - he'll think it looks absolutely amazing.

Hell, the two fan RAM cooling system could even be likened to a Chinook :)
