Bikes 2017 and a build log for my Quadangle.

Not sure man. It's 4130 so it's not a dead weight like Hi ten steel but it has a fair amount of weight. Being honest though so do I, and I have had some real battle axes in the past (like stupid heavy bikes). Hilariously because of the steerer tube the forks are as heavy as the frame lol. Actually I have some postal scales, so I will weigh it tomorrow.

Very nice :)

Also LOL at the size of that colour sample image.

Hah it was bigger than that :D I run 1440p so it was huge as I wanted to place parts next to it to see if they would go. I took the code directly from the original '96 model so it should be spot on to the period.

Forgot to add. Some one actually came up with a genuine never opened set of '96-'99 decals too (the bottom ones).

$50, but hey no customs charges and the shipping was incredibly cheap @ $96 so I figured I would go all in.

The stem arrived too, finally. Nearly two bloody weeks, bless the Hermes !

Update.

I managed to rescue the OM RIP sticker and have put it onto double sided tape so it can be used again. Was a bit of a PITA to cut it out but I got there eventually. I also got some extra birthday money in, so I have ordered the tyres.

Well, actually my family ordered them for me. I love Panaracer tyres. Very light and very good quality. They are half the weight of a typical BMX tyre. Plus I wanted this bike to be more of a race bike than a street bike. This moves me onto the next part, the brakes. I was going to ditch the gyro and cut off the tabs from the frame. However, having looked at it and having absolutely zero confidence right now the nagging thought of killing a $245 frame and fork set over the tabs concerned me. I've been on a low since December (bipolar disorder) and yeah, I have no confidence right now nor do I want to be operating power tools. So I have decided to keep the gyro tabs and my family also ordered me this.

Which should get me all up and running. I must say, having a rotor is fun and spinning bars has always made me smile. Plus they will contrast nicely with the yellow.

I'm proper going to look like Ronald MacDonald by the time this bike is done :D

The only two parts I need now are a headset and a chain. The only chain I have is orange and won't work with the bike. I may keep the Panaracer tyres as new and fit them when the bike isn't being ridden and just ride the black SE tyres. Not sure yet. I do think the mix of race and street is a good idea though, as the PK is pure race. I can't have any fun on that really apart from riding it.

Ticking along nicely, keep goin', the sun might even start shining one day in Blighty as well...

It's balls cold and windy here atm. No chance I am trying to ride in this weather I'd get blown over !

I missed a post about the powder coating..

Fun with powder (and I don't mean the white stuff !).

So I phoned around a few places today about getting the stuff powder coated. I had picked a colour from the '96 frame in Photoshop and was happy with it. It was like a mellow banana yellow. However, I came to find that powder is not like paint and they do not use hex codes for the colours. They use what is called an RAL chart and you have to pick a colour from there, they do not colour match like you can with paint. This all seemed OK until I started looking at the RAL colours. They all just seemed so damn bright !.

Any way, after looking at another example of the '96 in yellow.

Which I would imagine was NOS and never built compared to the other sample I found in yellow.

Which seems to be well ridden and missing decals etc.

So the closest I could find to that small pic of a quad was RAL 1018 Zinc yellow. I looked around for a sample of it actually in the flesh and...

I think TBH that is about as close as I am going to get really. It's a bit brighter, but hey I was never known for subtle and at least it will match my avatar lol..

Please, please PLEASE forgive me, but I hope yours doesnt end up like this. It looks like something my 5 yr old niece rides around on at the moment. Maybe its because its on the bike stand that looks like stabilizer wheels ;)

I'd have loved it if you had used black and chrome. Every bike looks good in black!

Well if it looks like that no car can say they didn't see him

It won't look as gaudy as that no. I have deliberately used black things to break it up.

It will look something like that though. I guess you weren't a kid of the 80s huh? you really needed to be there to understand it dude :D

Mine has 36h spoked wheels too. Which removes a massive slab of colour.

Im 36 so yeah, I grew up in the 80s :) But good you are breaking up the colours. Also 36H spoke will make a huge difference on looks... THANK GOD :D

Yup black SE racing rims laced onto sealed hubs :) Also note the tyres have a black sidewall. The crank arms and disc are black, so are the brakes. The seat clamp will also be black to break down any colour merge.

That's how you do lairy colours. You need to step them in between. Just putting them on each other creates merge.

Plus I may not ride on the red tyres. I have a brand new set of all black SE road tyres.

I must admit I am a little tempted to go back and do the frame and forks red, but now I have a load of yellow stuff. Plus I really want something I have not had before too.

Yeah boyeeee

The small wrapped up roll behind them is the red vinyl to cut my Landing Gear stickers :D

They stopped tracking four days ago and I was worrying real bad because they were expensive and nearly twenty years old so very hard to find. Thank god they are here, the literal icing on the birthday cake :D

I'm waiting for the piece by piece assembly, long time since I stripped a bike down that much

Me too mate, me too ! Thing is things have changed since 1999 too. I bought a headset as well.

But it's apparently an internal headset and therefore will not work with my frame. I CBA returning it as it was only a tenner and I need the spacers any way (they would cost me £5) but yeah, second part I have bought that won't work due to changes.

So a couple of minor errors along the way. The first stem I bought too was no good because it's for a mountain bike and they are like 30mm plus on the bars now. It was listed as a BMX stem though, so have taken it up with the seller.

The main worry is getting the cups and bearings in. But I am going to buy a piece of threaded rod and make my own press for about a tenner. Once those are in? everything else is easy enough with a 10mm, 15mm and adjustable. Oh and allen keys of course.

I was just going to post saying that's an integrated headeset you might struggle with your frame. To put a headset in, just get a cloth, fold it up, put it over the cups and hit with a hammer on it's side. I've put many headsets in in my time and this method takes 2 seconds, I've never damaged a headset.

I used to use a very big vice with wood blocks. Sadly I don't have that any more.. I do have a rubber hammer though.

Gutted about the headset as I got it in a clearance for a tenner. But, I can use the spacers and they are worth about half so I won't lose out completely :)

Thankfully the hollow bolt and cap fit the frame. I also didn't know that modern fork sets have the bolt part welded in.

The only thing I need now (well apart from the headset that will work lol) is a chain. Not decided on red or yellow yet so may leave that until the bike is built. Going to order a stand on Friday too, getting a bit old to be sitting on the floor :)

Luckily headsets aren't very expensive :)
Spacers are usually less than £1 each.
