Bikes 2017 and a build log for my Quadangle.

I figured I would put this here, given it's what I am up to. I usually post logs about computers and sound gear but I figured it was something to read for you if you are bored or fancy reading about something else :D

I have two bikes on the go atm. One is nearly built (and I will start riding it once it is) and the other is going to take a while.

First up is my Mike Buff PK Ripper.

It's nearly there. Just waiting on the carbon post so I can get into riding position and crank everything tight/adjust the brakes etc.

OK so that is pretty much done now. I want to start riding again this year. Don't think I would do anything mental like I used to, just riding from point to point and improving my general fitness. I feel I can tackle this now after being smoke free for three years (and noticing a massive difference in getting out of breath etc).

The thing is as much as I love this bike it's not what I really wanted.

In 1998 I was big into riding BMX (street and stunts mostly) and was starting to feel like I didn't want to be injured any more. So I built one of these.

And spent around two grand on it. If you know BMX then all I really need to say is USA made F&F, Fusion 3 PC USA made, Fusion chain ring USA made, Peregrine Super Pro 48 sealed and so on. It was the elite of BMX.

Mine was all red so looked like this one.

Only problem is that they are rare and very expensive. You won't get much change from £600 buying a used frame and it is just that, a used frame complete with scratches and so on. They are also 6061 Alu so dent and gouge easily.

OK so how do I basically get my bike back without going broke?

During the mid 2000s SE Racing took the Quadangle back to its freestyle roots (Reynolds CRO MO) but kept the frame style that I fell in love with. It's a long bike with a deck adequate for a rider my height (5'10). They called it the Quadangle Pro.

The price was expensive at first but then SE went bankrupt again (they have been in and out of business like a mole pops in and out of the ground!) so they were sold off cheap. Now SE are back again but they do not sell them (typical).

So what I wanted to do was basically get hold of a frame and forks from SoCal where they are made and then take it in my own direction. The first quest was finding the mid 90s graphics I liked.

That was about the best I could do. I then took them into Photoshop.

Drew in the missing part as you can see and then started drawing outlines I could lay with texture and colours later.

Then put in the dots. I did this manually, one at a time. There were over a thousand. Took about three hours.

OK so I stuck out a feeler on a BMX forum I frequent and one of the guys came through with the missing graphic. I then redrew that. Note, there is some silver missing from the SE RACING part I will add that in next time I edit them. Good thing I didn't send them off to the printers like that :D

OK, so basically graphics got. I am not going to put the 6061 alu decal on the frame that would be a bit daft. I will probably make my own custom sticker with my name on it or something to go on the seat tube.

OK so here are more parts for the bike.

Notably wheels, tyres, handlebars (ignore the colour that is coming off) and so on. I then needed a stem.

Stem cap.

Brakes.

Cables, linings and outers (red)

Seat post.

Brake nipples.

OK so pause for a bit. I was all set to do it in red, then I saw this and fell in love instantly.

So I mocked up and decided on Yellow frame, red fork and accessories (bars etc).

I have decided on the last one. I am going to do the handlebars red also (powder coated same as the frame and forks) and I think that will pop like crazy. I am using the colour palette from a very old bike from the early 80s.

I then ordered a crank.

Chain disc (Profile copy)

Grips and bar ends.

And axle adapters as the frame is 14mm.

This is the bike I bought here out in Cali last week :D

It should be here soon :)

Seat post finally got. Had a bit of a nightmare because there is a bolt you can not get to easily. I would imagine that is because it is designed for one of those MTB seats with the middle missing? gawd knows. I had to cut down a allen key with my Dremel.

But yeah, PK is nearly done. Need to adjust the back wheel slightly and then air up the tyres and adjust the brakes.

Hopefully should get it out over the next few days :)

OK so stuff is now arriving so I got a few photos in the flesh :)

First up the seat I am using.

And the post.

Grips and ends.

The crank and disc came too, and thankfully it had a disk adapter :)

14mm axle adapters.

Some stopping power.

And the cables came too :)

I've decided on a name too. "The Banana Split". Not from the TV show (even though I loved it, one banana two bananas etc) but from the dessert. In the UK I go to a local fish and chip restaurant and always order a banana split for my pudding. I don't have chocolate sauce though I have it with strawberry sauce, which kinda reminds me of the colours I am using on the bike.

haha yeah I will probably drop it a bit. This isn't a freestyle bike though man it's a race bike, hence the lightweight components and 6061 alu. It's the one I am hoping to get fit on, though it is looking like I have arthritis so even that could be severely limited.

Getting old sucks man.

Might be time to leave the BMXs to the kids and get yourself mountain bike. ;)

An old body can't take all the abuse of a young body, And I'm speaking from experience

I know dude, too well lol. The last serious slam I took pretty much ended my pro riding. I've not really ridden a bike meaningfully since. It's only that we have a promenade with a cycle lane away from the road that I am bothering now.

When I was young I would fall, bleed a bit and get back on the bike. When I went down in my early 30s I stayed down... So yeah, nothing too crazy now. May drop the odd gap if I can find anything but will make sure that I stay on the bike.

I had a 21 gear light wieght racer I rapped me and it around a lamppost, 8 weeks off work, never been on a bike since

It sucks man, that is for sure. I like racers but the problem is I start hopping them up curbs etc.. Just force of habit really. I'm not a light guy either. 18 or so stone @ 5'10. Even at ride fit I am around 14 stone.

But yeah when I came down the last time I came down hard. Over the bars straight onto a road that looked like grade 1 sandpaper. I scalped my elbow (had my arms over my face) and had to have surgery. Now I have no padding in my elbow at all so every time I bang it I yelp.

I destroyed the bike I was on too. I bought another one a couple of years later but crapped myself just riding down the street.

Thankfully a couple of years back I built a bike and rode that a few times. Started to build up my confidence a little.

I've gone as far as I can with regards to safety. Helmet gloves etc. Still, I know a slam would probably lay me up for months.

That's one thing i miss, these days i watch what I eat, when I rode everywhere I ate what i liked and still weighed the same as when I left school.

Another tip wear steel toe cap boots for when idiots open car doors with out looking, nothing like leaving a dent in the door to remind them to look next time

haha I usually carry a heavy lock and chain around my neck :D

Will be staying well clear of the road though.

They're crap. Every one I have had I have broken. You can not ride street on a MTB they just die.

I'll disagree there. I have an Inspire MTB which is designed exactly for riding "street". I also have a specialised stumpjumper and demo8 so they do take abuse from 2metre drops and such and just keep going.

My issue is prob same as most.. Ive got older now so the "fear" of falling is creeping on me. When I was 18 I wasnt satisfied until I hit the deck at least once, or had some bruises to show for my weekend ride.

It was always the rear derailleur that would go. Riding down fire escapes and dropping gaps etc. I also never quite got the hang of tuning them, so they would fall out of tuning and then endo - back hop = caught in the spokes snap when you ride away.

There are probably mountain bikes out there that can take that sort of punishment, but not for a few hundred quid. I did think about a single speed Kona trick bike once (was 24" IIRC) but it sold before I pulled the trigger.

I found on account of size a 20" wheel could take a pretty decent beating. Especially the deep lip ones. Plus that was just what I rode dude. Never could get my head around huge great big wheels, always felt a bit cumbersome. Plus there is far less to go wrong on a BMX.

Poppy ! I've been doing it for years, started on a custom Pace cube frame hard tail, had a GT LTS3000 which soaked up the knocks like a pro then a GT Timberline same thing, they don't have to break the bank you just need the right frame size. OK some full sus bikes don't lend themselves to street like the GT STS lobo or Kona Stab (owned those too) but still they're fun. Ive come down in the world of cycling over the last few years but my latest bike the Carrera (mirrida) Titan LE loves hard hits an just keeps going for a £600 full sus its awesome.
