Anybody got a Wii ?

Like the tilte says, was just wondering if anyone here has got one of these or tried one out. I value the opinions of EP-UK members as they all know how to appreciate serrious hardware.

I was hoping my flat mate who's really into his Nintendo would buy one, or get one for his b-day but it still hasn't happened :(

The only thing I heard is that some fool is sueing for straining himself useing the fishing gyro thing

My bro got one shortly before xmas. Some games like Call of Duty3 are a little weird to get used to as they are so different to conventional games (the controls) but others like the boxing game you see in the adverts are good fun.

I don't have one but what i read was that the console hold sit's own as far as games go in terms of graphics and sound (uses same GPU and xbox 360 iirc).

The control does not detract from the experience but in 50% of the available titles it does not really add to the experience either (ie the game would be just as good without it) .

In games such as boxing etc - the new system is really immersive too.

I was under the impression it isn't a much more powerful than the gamecube, certainly cannot be compared to the XBOX360 or PS3 but then I don't think it ever was supposed to be. I've never used one but I'd imagine the concept would wear thin fairly quickly.

I thought ATI used the SAME GPU in both consoles (Xbox360 and Wii) - I don tknow the specifics, but having already seen some of the games on it I can tell you it is better than a PS2 in terms of my perception of better graphics and effects - having not seen the Xbox or PS3 I dont have a reference point and therefore can't say anymore than that.

iirc though it does not have the multmedia properties of the foremtnioned next gen consoles either (in the same way a gamecube never did).

Hmm, I think if you going to compare the Xbox360 GPU with the one from a Wii, they are both made by ATI but then the comparison stops.

Afaik the Wii GPU is a lot similar to a Radeon X700 (8pipes, 243mhz core, 64mb dedicated gddr3) (*), while the Xbox 360 GPU is a lot like the Radeon X1900 (48pipes, 500mhz core, 512mb shared gddr3).

Huge performance difference, but I have a Wii and all I can tell you is graphics have very little to do with gameplay. :)

(*) Some say the Ati "hollywood" GPU is based on the X1600 (RV530), which might be possible too as it would make more sense as this is a more uptodate chip with real low power consumption. The Wii only consumes 17W under load so I think a crippled X1600 could be under there bonnet.

Nice one Fred thanks for the update - 17w under load - awesome.

Tell us what u works, does not work etc.....

From what i remember the confusion with the gamecube is because when Nintendo displayed the Wii at E3 last year it was actually shown on a Gamecube.

The graphics are upgraded from that, but not on the level of the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Having said that, i would take gameplay over looks any day, have yet to try the Wii out, looks like it could be a blast.

If you're into graphics you'd be better off with PC games as the graphic technology developes so quickly. It's all about the game play. I know if I was going to buy a console (which I'm not :p ) it'd be the Wii :D

Well I got myself one of these and I have to say the gameplay is solid. I have never liked consoles because I have felt limited by the controllers but with the Wii this has all changed. Like other people have stated, it's not about graphics it's about playability, Tetris is a good example of this. Having said that I think it's graphics capabilites are very good (got CoD3 & Red Steel), better than a PS2 but obviously short of the PS3. Where the Wii really comes into play is in multi player mode, it's just so much fun to play with family and friends. Even my wife, who loathes this type of stuff usually is continously bugging me to put on tennis for her. My brother had a serrious workout on the boxing game (2 hours solid) that all his muscles were aching the next day. I've got it hooked up to my projector at the moment which enhances things alot. A very different and enjoyable experience.

The more I read about these the more I'm seriously thinking about picking one up :)

To excercise and play arcade games at the same time? As a family man I am all for it, as children move toward the status of 'console potato' what a refreshing way to get the cardio workout they need.

Of course parents who (like me) have let themselves go a bit, should have a go to :$

As zax stated I am sure its great to be able to engage the whole familty too.

Yeah, first time you play Wii sports (especially tennis or boxing), expect to have a sour arm the next day. :D

One drawback of the Wii, which I never see mentioned, is that for games that require aiming (mainly shooters) you have to be seated right in front your TV, and not too far away. If you living room isn't build around a TV, playing some games on a Wii might be annoying. If you play consolegames with a traditional controller it doesn't matter whether you're exactly in front of your TV or have ample room to move around.

A huge bonus is the backwards compatability imho. The Wii has had a good launch with a fair amount of games, but unless you want to buy mediocre games there are not much more than 2 or 3 wii games worth it's money right now. What you can do, is buy the top 5 gamecube games second hand for 10 euro a piece, and have a blast with it on your Wii. I already bought soul calibur 2 (awesome streetfighter-like game) and rented Resident Evil 4 (according to gamerankings.com the best game ever, and I can't dissagree).

Hardcore gamers that play multiple hours a day and have already played the GC games might be disappointed with the Wii though... unless they use it as a second console.

Does that mean you can play Mario Smash Football on the Wii :gool: If so I'm deffo getting one!
