Any way to tell if its a CPU or Motherboard fault?

Hi,

i was having random crashes on the computer. Decided to stress test to work out the problem. Ran Intel burn test for around 3 seconds and the computer shutdown. I went to reboot and the motherboard lights just flashed and thats it.

No PSU fan, no mobo lights, nothing.

Changed for a known working PSU, same outcome.
Removed everything from the mobo except the cpu, same result.

removed the cpu so just power to the motherboard, PSU fan spins and the 'CPU fault' light comes on on the mobo.

CMOS has been cleared and motherboard is on the latest bios

Board is an Z390 Aorus Pro
CPU 8700k
RAM DDR4 3600

What i would like to know is, have you any ideas i can try? if not is there a way to confirm whether its the cpu or mobo?

Did you try each individual ram stick with the CPU installed? Could be a failed memory module.

A CPU isn't likely to die unless it was subjected to incredibly high temperatures for an extended period of time especially if it was working just fine showing no random out of character signs of it's usual operation.

it was the motherboard. I put the CPU in, turned on the PSU and pressed the power button and there was a puff of smoke and a crackle.

Looks like one of the chokes, or a resistor on the back side of the choke has let go, so now i need a new board
