Hi AMDFTW,

I done 12 years in the Army, was the best 12 years of my life and still miss the comradership even after 9 years being in civvy street :(

Once a soldier always a soldier as they say :)

hey Judderman.

yer i no what u mean coming out into civvy street to uni was the worst mistake of my life Bad times but yer correct Once a soldier always a soldier

yeh spent 9 years in it my self. did quiet a few tours and stuff like that how ever its not some thing i dont talk about alot. just aknolage that i been there done it and was a squaddy bart as well. inc being a squaddiy brat i sepnt 27 of my life with the forces.

Nah, wouldn't want to go, even if my job wasn't shooting a gun or even leaving the country. I couldn't leave my family behind like that, I find it very disrespectful. People say it's serving the country, but tbh family is the most important thing to me. I take my hat off to people that have the courage to go though, without a doubt strongest people ever, and how they can still smile after what they've seen behind enemy lines is beyond me. Seeing a dead body was enough for me lol, felt sick for days.

My best mate is an armourer in the Army, but he's going civvy in march (to be a plumber).

AMDFTW, i'm looking to join the RAF as a gunner this year (well, been wanting to do it for a couple of years now), any advice mate?

Theres more jobs than being a gunner you know :) Also the Army Air Corps have door gunners for their Helicopters.

But here you go http://www.raf.mod.uk/careers/jobs/rafregiment.cfm

Infantry in the Army is a similar sort of job with regards to training.

@youngie, its not disrespectful leaving your family behind, most people are in the Forces before they get married and families know it is part of the package, it is a hard thing to do though and I can understand its not for some people.

What does wind me up is when you see celebrities in the jungle or wherever saying how much they miss their families, they should try being away for 5 months without seeing them, again though its part of the package of being in the forces.

I joined the Army in 1986 and am still serving, and tbh I would not change a thing. I akso accept the fact that it is not for some people but one thing is true, it matures young people and teaches them respect and discipline, something that is lacking in alot (not all) of young people these days.
