AMD Overdrive problems

I've got an AMD FX-4100 on the Asus m5197 mobo and i finally decided to overclock it. i had the easy overclock to 4.15 ghz from the uefi bios but since i've got a Corsair H60 why not go higher. I'm currently running at 230mhz core clock, 18x multiplier and 1.4125V. The Problem is that OverDrive wont let me change the HT Clock, even though i followed all the steps necessary to unlock it, in UEFI though i can change it. Other way around it is with the multiplier, i can change that in overdrive, but i cant find it in UEFI. That all wouldnt be a problem if i could just change the core clock in UEFI and then the multiplier in overdrive, but unfortunately overdrive will reset the core clock to 200mhz. Any advice?

/update/ i found the multiplier in uefi, so now i'm running at 4.5 ghz. 237 core, 19x, 1.41 V. is that any good? when i run prime95 it freezes.

Don't bother with Overdrive. Its a nifty looking utility and good for monitoring but use your BIOS for overclocking.

If you're freezing up in P95 then your overclock is not stable. Gonna have to tinker and experiment with LLC, voltage, CPU/NB, HT Link and other things. You should be able to do a little better than 4.5 so you're just gonna have to do some trial and error. I prefer OCCT for stress testing as it has it's handy, all-in-one monitoring system as well.

nope that was definitely not steady. problem is i've got that stupid version of the uefi bios, all the tuts for uefi are based on the more advanced boards. now going to try 230 x19

ooop not steady either. went back to the standard clocks. problem is now when i start up my pc all programs keep crashing. help?

google chrome and games are still running, but catalyst, chrome plugins, and ims are crashing.

Alright this whole thing gets more and more confusing. now catalyst, my sidebar gadgets and im's work again, but aero isnt.

Good God son, what did you do? An unstable overclock can cause errors in the OS and corrupt it but that takes a good bit of time. Try resetting the CMOS and maybe re-seat the RAM. Doubt that'll fix it but worth a shot. I have no idea what's happened. Maybe you fried a memory stick so run Memtest as well.

Reinstalled windows, wasnt that big of a deal, 10 minutes with ssd. idk what happend either, it wasnt a big overclock but prime95 always made it crash after about a minute. so i had to restart and after i clocked it down to stock again all programs kept crashing. but now its fine again, checked on all the hardware, everything is okay. i guess i learned my lesson, i will have to spend somewhat more time to learn how to overclock properly.

Pheasant, glad you got it fixed. That would've sucked if you had fried something.

Thing with overclocking is to start small. Start with the multiplier first as that doesn't put any extra stress on the motherboard where FSB levels do.

The auto overclock is at 4.14 ghz, 230 core, 18x multiplier, 1.41V. that one is stable, it survived prime95 for hours, no problem. my overclock was 230 core, 19x multiplier, 1.41V. crash after 1 minute of prime 95.
