8800 Ultra question.

Im not the only one with this problem it seems. Will have to figure this out fast before the thing burns up. Could well be a Vista issue tbh

i used to use msi myself but i had problems with it controlling one of the fans on my 9800gt it would default the fan speed all the time and leave it running at 35% and the card would get veryyy hot

and yeah vista sucks win 7 FTW!

No need. Afterburner = sex. Honestly without doubt the best app I have ever used. Not only does it work and tame the beast (42c idle 31% speed) but the settings are piss easy. No bugering around, set your heat points, move a slider to create a curve and bingo bongo. I noticed it says powered by riva tuner, that would be why RT hasnt been updated since cat 9.2.

Afterburner has saved my sanity and my 3870x2. I was idling @ 79c ffs.

running Vantage. Fan has hit about 50% so far after a complete test. I don't mind the noise I just don't want it to burn up tbh. Course having the side of the case off isn't helping as its not getting fed air very well (from the front or the side that isnt even there) so itll no doubt be a lot quieter and cooler once I put the case back together.

Sadly even though I told it to Afterburner isnt loading with Windows. So now I will have to look at adding it to the startup folder because forgetting will cost me the card tbh.

Yeah deffo. Problem is I only have one technet serial. I could use a loader but that's naughty and there's always a risk of being deacto'ed. I'm not in the mood for that, or paying £100+ for another copy.

My Vista HP is also 100% genuine (not even technet, though my technet is fine as it wont be double activated) but the Vista is fully licensed COA etc.

My Vista license is full and activates. I've shifted it between a few PCs now and all I have to do is call and activate on different hardware. So I guess the serial is retail? no idea. All I know is it works lol

I didn't say any such thing :D

Any way, whatever the plan was it's cool now. Mate gave me another technet.

I don't condone piracy either.. It sucks. I honestly mean that too, that's why my shelves are littered with original games.

Was my fault that the 8800u died. There's something wrong with the PCIE GPU fan controls on this mobo. Yes afterburner works very well but I noticed on the 8800 I never ever heard the fan spin up.

Even after installing 7 I still have no GPU fan controls or speed in CCC. So it has to be afterburner.

Got Windows 7 done in a few hours. Edited my registry to save a reinstall of Fallout 3 and played for two hours last night. Afterburner kept the card to 53c under load with the odd whizz from the fan here and there, mostly when I shot up some buses and cars and the explosions kicked in.

But I tell you lads, this 3870x2 is a bloody monster for £55. It totally outstrips the Ultra in Fallout 3 and the temps are really good. I have never had the fan go over 55%. Sure it's a bit noisy and all of that heat has to go somewhere (into my room sadly) but the actual GPUs are very happy.

As am I. When the 3870x2 released and was reviewed it didn't fare so well. Thing is, people have not realised that since then ATI have done everything they can to improve the scaling and drivers and now it works better than ever.

Seriously kick ass card for pennies. Takes some swotting to set up the fan controls and keep it in check, but once that's done it just eats through games.
