On the Ultra?
everything gets hot on it. You need to remember it's basically a volt modded 8800GTX (more heat) with a 12% overclock. That doesn't come for free man
If the ram hasn't died the RAMDAC has. It wasn't a GPU problem. What would happen is it would work fine, then as soon as you run Furmark or Fallout 3 it would crash the app, flash some red artifacts and then give the "display driver has stopped working and recovered" error. I don't know if the heatsink was fouling contact OR if there is physical damage. The GPU itself was getting no hotter than idle (62c) as it didn't even get the chance to warm up.
Thermal pads seem impossible to find. You can get a CPU one (tiny) for about £8. I would need about 5. Sadly it's not economical to spend that much on it and the baking not worked.. So for now I will put it all back together and maybe in the future something will come up. Being the KO OC it's worth hanging onto
Any way, right now I am too pleased to give a crap about it really... The 3870x2 arrived thismorning. I was extremely apprehensive as I had just almost been burned. That worked out bloody well as I would never have gotten £75 for my D2X. They're only around £100 new now. So the card came and I carefully peeled off all the brown packing tape. I wanted to try and keep the box.
Since opening it I have ran some selotape along the inside and outside of those tears. Common problem, people don't realise you should pop open both ends of the box and push the internal cardboard box out. Never mind.. I mean, I am so anal about keeping boxes and stuff. My loft has a corner where all of my boxes are wrapped in plastic bags and stored. Opening the box it was a really pleasant surprise to see it looking original.
Now I was trying not to get too excited because it's so hard finding mint hardware. Usually people want mint prices for it (like cars) and £55 for a 3870x2 is too cheap. It had literally been on ebay for about a minute before I pounced as it wasn't there during my initial search and showed up on a page refresh. Unwrapping it I was greeted with this.
Surely this is too good for £55? surely? It looked like it had been dipped in a bath of hot water. The only tell tale sign of use was the dust in the fan.
So OK, this thing has been apart right? He's obviously cleaned it all up and it's buggered? So I had a close inspection starting with the shroud. It must be full of dust, surely?
Nothing. The body is transparent and you can't hide a single spec of dust. This is too good to be true surely? Surely this card has been apart? Nope. Look at the thermal pads. They're definitely undisturbed. They spread when people mess with them and bits of string hang out.
Flipping it over I checked the other side. A good few of these have been on ebay with paint chips or broken legs. Nothing. Right now I was beginning to suspect this dude lives in Vault 101. Seriously, he must have a particle removing machine in his house.
Checked the back for tell tale signs and again, nothing.
I was seriously beginning to think I had found a dude who looked after his hardware as well, if not better, than myself. Final check, look into the escape exit and see if the copper is clogged or discoloured. Nothing. This card is as close to new as is possible.
So something has to give. This card can not work properly. Fitted it in.
So now I am really crapping my pants. Pressed down the power button and waited a few seconds....
Well bugger me sideways, it works. No artifacts.. 20 mins and some hot driver love later.
Right up there trading blows with the 8800u. Now I just hope that I haven't spoken too soon but this could well be bargain of the month
