8800 Ultra question.

if it was me id rather add that little bit extra to get a far superior card, hell ive seen 5770's go second hand for less than £90 these days

single 5770 doesn't have the raw speed needed for it mate. Does run, but suffers from slowdown due to the 128 bit memory thing.

I've been offered a Sapphire Radeon 3870x2 for £55 boxed. Have just asked if it's 100% before I go ahead. I mean really, that kind of power for £55.

Good thing is I will get back £15-£20 on the Ultra cooler as it has the backplate (KO ed) or you never know it might even be working.

i havent really paid much attention to the 3870x2's but that does seem quite cheap do they run hot being a dual gpu card?

Yeah I guess. But then tbh they've got to be cooler than the Nvidia cards. Heat isn't the issue mate tbh. I lay 20ft away from the machine it's for.

Only thing that is concerning me is the seller only has 1 feedback. However, I suppose it's Paypal so if it doesn't arrive or arrives buggered I'll get my money back.

Haha :D Finally got to see the proper pics and it seems Sapphire addressed the problem with this card. Same old story, PCB warp cracked joins. Oddly all of the ones I have ever seen on Ebay working have been Sapphires. They do make a mean dualy, couple of mates went for the 4870x2 and 4850x2 and have been absolutely trouble free.

Pic :)

As you can see it's pretty seriously braced on the backside. One last worry is his email addy is Polish and his name is.. Not that that's a problem but he's supposed to be based in the U.K.

Ah well, that's what Ebay protection is for man :)

Also, it pees on the 8800u in the Tom's Hardware Heirachy :D

Yup well pleased. Good thing I have a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter too !

Never know, the 8800u may even work again. I suppose I will find out on Tuesday :D

Wicked he just made contact. Card is 100% and has been running on a Corsair 520w psu. Should be no problem for my Delta 750w :D

LOL. Dude the more I think about the 8800 Ultra thing the more I LOL. I didn't mean to be rude in the emails but man, it was funny....

"Has this card been in with the biscuits by chance?"

As soon as I said that he offered a refund. Hahahaha. Thing is, any one with half a brain can see what he gets up to by looking through his feedback.. I mean crap, one week he's bought himself a borked graphics card, then he has bought some liquid flux and then the next he's sold the card as fully working. Crafty git :D

Slight update. Stripped the Ultra today and gave it a ruddy good cleaning. Also noticed that the RAMdac didn't have a thermal pad either

Still, it's all clean now and I have a 1"x12" strip of thermal pad coming (hopefully) tomorrow which should be enough to repad the entire card. I have some OCZ Freeze for the GPU and can hopefully get it all back together. If it still doesn't work then at least it will look awesome on my shelf :D It looks like new now haha.

I too have a shelf of borked hardware, but I hope that this works for you :D At least you got a pretty decent card with the 3870x2

Paypal are usually pretty good, and a person with one feedback is probably more careful than one with 50, as they need that score. I bought a 9800GT a few weeks back, took about two weeks to arrive as it had come from the netherlands and been searched by dear old HM customs. This was from a UK seller :(

I've got a really bad feeling mine is coming from bloody Poland mate :(

It says Peterborough Cambridgeshire in the auction but no matter how bloody hard I look I can't find his addy. Well when I did some poking it comes up with a Polish name and his email is @.o2.pl

Which may explain why it was so darned cheap (I mean come on £55 for a mint boxed 3870x2? they go for 80s all day) but doesn't exactly fill me with hope. Shipping times are also really bad.. Second class for a start?!?! and over all I have to wait about 10 business days before I can complain.

He has bought one thing on Ebay though, a mosquito fly screen thing. So with any luck he is actually here.

OK apparently he does live in Peterborough and it's on its way first class recorded. Sooo, hopefully it and the thermal pads will arrive tomorrow and I can play :D
