8-pin plugs on PSUs

I`ve never noticed this before, but on some PSUs there is NO 4-pin connector for the mobo, but theres an 8-pin one instead. Can this 8-pin be used with a home-made adaptor to make a 4-pin plug, or are PSUs with this 8-pin plug not compatable with NF3/4 boards?

Thanks a lot,

Kenny :)

Mostly they come backwards compatable - that is to say (like with my PCP&P) they come supplied with an 8pin-4pin adaptor.

Does anyone have a pin-map of an 8-pin to 4-pin adapter? I got a new PSU that only has the 8-pin plug, and I need a 4-pin ATX one for my mobo :)

Thanks!

Kenny

im in same boat mate, have an enermax 660w supply with the 8pin power, cant use it though so im stuck on my old non atx 2 supply for now, i need a solution for this tbh

Hey BIOS...I know that the 8-pin plugs can be adapted to 4-pin...I got a picture, but I need to know if 4 pins are left open or if its 2-pins to one for the conversion :) By the looks, the 8-pin plug has 4x12V pins and 4xGND so I could guess the adapter...but theres too much money riding on that :)

I`m hoping to have this sorted by the end of the day :) Will let you know how I get on.

Ur welcome :) Back from maplin, working on it now. Will post piccies and try to film the smoke that comes off the PSU when I inevitably screw it up :)

:D

Before I go on... the wire colours of my PCP+C are weird... they dont match the pattern of the plug I`ve got posted above, or the colours listed on the PCP+C site.... i`ve emailed PCP+C, waiting for the reply. BIOS...please check your plug before you try it :)

Kenny

DONE.... The plug is made...now to test it...Any mistakes= dead computer= very poor and upset Kenny.
