4770K v 4790K

I am currently working on a Maximus V Formula with a 3770K which hums along at 4.7 GHz and about 1.21 v. I have cranked it out to 5.0 GHz and it survived the ROG Real Bench test as well as Prime 95.

I am getting itchy feet and decided I am going for a complete new build.

Now my primary use is gaming along with a dabble here and there with overclocking.

When I look at the ROG Leaderboard, there are not a lot of 4790'd up near the top.

Should I go for one of those and hope I get a good one, or get the more reliable 4770K which has proven itself? Or, should I go totally left of field and go for a Socket 2011-3?

Anyone know which is the better CPU and boards for gaming/overclocking?

Socket 2011 is only really useful if you have a shed load of cards i.e SLI or Crossfire-X or you need a highly productive environment i.e rendering etc...

Get a 4790K if you have your heart set on an upgrade as it has better thermals than the 4770K and you have a higher chance of getting a good overclock, Usually in the 4.60GHZ region from what I've seen so far and my own personal experience.

As for overclocking they are all pretty much the same, You're going to get the exact same clock on a £00 board as you would on an £80 board these days.

3770k is still a very good CPU for gaming.

The 4770k and 4790k offer very little over the 3770k, maybe a couple of % more efficiency but neither of these are likely to reach the same overclock as your 3770k.

If I was you I would stick with the 3770k and thank the silicon lottery gods that you have got one that can do 5.0ghz.

Moving from a 3770K to an 4770K or 4790K would not give you much performance gain (TBH you would probably have lower performance as you will probably not be able to overclock as high)

As Kaapstad said you are very lucky to have an overclock as high as yours.

Sounds like you have a really nice chip at the moment but if you are really up for a new build then why not, its not like you have to throw the 3770K away... XD

If it is as you say for gaming and over-clocking you really won't beat what you have right now. If that is genuinely your interest but you want some new toys to play with throw some serious money into cooling with proper attention to detail and see if you can clock even higher. Or improve the graphics/storage/audio/monitor/peripheral setup you currently have.

If you just feel like doing another 'build' in it's entirety and keep your old kit then I guess go with a 4790k or maybe just a 4690k. Personally for shear overclocking fun I haven't enjoyed playing with anything more than my old 2600k (I had a MVF too) and a GTX760 Striker I had and sold recently. They both just behaved very predictably and delivered far more than I expected from them.

Don't get me wrong my SLI 780 Classy's and 4820k produce far more impressive numbers but i'm just too worried about over stepping the mark to enjoy it. Sounds like you have yourself an exceptional 3770k enjoy it to the full because it's not something you can just replace.
