All companies make mistakes , at one point of time or the other. ATI were nowhere in the picture till they came out with 9500 pros and 9700 pros. The geforce line was kicking 8500 model's ass at that point. ATI was going in loss becoz most of the time people would buy 9500 pros and soft mod it to 9700 pro . But they kept up the production becoz of the publicity. Then Nvidia fked things up with their FX lineup big time. However their comeback with the 6800 series sent ATI running to the drawing board. Nvidia to me convey brute power while ATI conveys Silent performance. Nvidia cards run hot , need power but damn they run nicely.
ATI has the shittiest OpenGL performance ever , not to mention their drivers cannot bring out the performance not matter how many updates. Nvidia on the other hand rapes in OpenGL and has decent Direct3d performance. So the choice in the end comes down to , whether you play more games encoded in Direct3d or in Opengl. For those who play both , Nvidia offers a better deal , but people who play HL2, Farcry , CS:Source ATI is the way to go .
