Valve "The Company" Have in-game items they can make there money from that instead of people buying the actual game, although allot of people did actually buy it.

Well yes allot of people play the game, it is the most popular game on steam if you look with a peek of about 100,000 players (I think) a day i am sure they make there money out of it.
