Zombie Mods - The Pockit Rockit

Hola !.

So after some discussion I think I know which direction I want to head in. I've got quite a large stock of mini hard drives that I've scavenged from numerous laptops, so let's talk spec.

Case - 99% Rajintek Metis.
Motherboard - Gigabyte B85N Phoenix (it has orange bits and orange LEDs, pics soon)
CPU - Intel Pentium Anniversary.
GPU - MSI GTX Titan Black.
Memory - 4gb Geil Extreme or 8gb Team group, not decided yet.
PSU - Corsair RM 750.
Cooling - whatever I can cram in there lol.
Hard drive - 100gb Intel 320 series and a 300gb 2.5" laptop drive.
Cooler - hopefully my existing Arctic.

The build in pics.

Here is the case I have decided on. The colour and so forth are still an option so I've not fully decided, but green is floating my boat ATM.

Now to help out with the tragic cooling I have actually ordered this.

Which will be cut into the top, along side where the GPU resides.

Other parts. I already have one of these.

One of these.

And of course, one of these.

Not sure yet whether I want to braid myself but I just ordered 100 feet of this.

And a hundred feet of this.

But not sure if I will braid myself just yet.

So more to come soon. I will probably decide on exactly which case next week and order one then :)

Am I the only one who thinks that a Titan Black and a Pentium don't exactly go hand in hand?

Might be something he has there to use up - its a cracking cheap for a dualy but you are right that a lot of modern games would favor some HT or a couple more cores.
At least his upgrade path is there if/when

Surely an i5 and a more budget-oriented GPU would have had him better off? An extreme budget CPU and an overpriced top-tier GPU aren't exactly what one would call "ideal". I just had to mention this: bottlenecks...

He already had the Titan just lying round*. TBH the pentium clocked very high will be fine. Benchmarking will only be affected in cpu based tasks.

*yes I'm jelly too :(

Cheers. Looks like the Metis is off the cards then so I'm leaning toward Hadron Air.

Cubitek do one as do a few other companies so I need to think hard. I will no doubt contact Parvum and see what sort of thing they could offer me.

Guys. RE - the hardware. It's just what I have to hand. With new APIs like Mantle* DX12, and the others I'm quite confident the CPU won't matter. Plus I am only going to be playing older games (yet with lots of graphical mods that eat VRAM and plus running 4k) so I'm not worried. It's a very easy job to throw in a Xeon or an I5 or what not later on :)

* yeah I know Mantle doesn't run on Nvidia but it has sparked off a new craze about making the GPU do all of the work. So with any luck it'll be OK any way :)

Yeah you're right but see my other posts. I bought a reasonable board and overclocking does work (already had a go last night but couldn't get Prime stable as I'm a noob with 1150 gotta get my head around the offset feature)

I only (he says only, after paying £699 a pop for the other two TBs) paid £390 for the GPU which was very good. Has a nice fat memory pipe on it, I'm not a fan of Maxwell 9xx.

It's just what I got atm. I only need it for gaming at 4k on my TV so I've only got to find 30 FPS.

Or you could get that 600 Watt SFX unit and do some sweet modding to make it fit ;)
Should be plenty power for the hardware as well.

On a side note, please stop double posting, we don't allow that. You can use the multi-quote or edit button instead :)

With 1150 - just try and go for a static clock to start with turn off all the power saving mumber jumbo and fix the volts etc.

It will respond really well to a tickle with the clocks but it wont solve the dreaded b word. Modern games would prefer a bit of HT or even better a couple more cores.

Thanks for that. Yeah I researched it when I got it an it was originally bought to be a Hackintosh but then I got a 8 core Xeon for £103 and found a X79 board for £52 so that's how the Hackintosh came to be :)

If I'm honest I only really want it for Fallout 3 @ 4k, and if you run any more than two cores on FO3 it just crashes, so you have to force the INI to use two only. /Inumthreads or something.

So it's looking like either the Hadron air atm. It's the perfect size and shape, about half the width of the 250D and includes a 500w gold PSU. Can't really argue at £115.

Apols for DP. Please do bear in mind that I'm autistic, so have some patience as I get in a bit of a fluster when things move fast.

Modding is easy but I'm worried that the Metis won't take a full length GPU. I can't risk throwing £40 down the toilet and returning it would be costly due to it being a full sized parcel (about £13).

If I saw a pic on the net or something showing it holding a Titan then man, I'd be all for modding. Would be piss easy getting a SFX PSU in 'cause all I would need to do is make an adapter plate out of acrylic and I have a sheet of white sitting doing nothing..

Who wrote the review? do you still have the chassis?

Edit. TBH? the beauty of the Pentium is that I could easily get away with a 450w SFX PSU :)

edit again

OK, so the Metis is 277mm deep. Sadly the Titan Black is 30cm or so so physically won't fit.

This is a crying shame, because the Hadron is pretty much identical but 330mm long.

Ah well, Hadron it is. I guess I can always mod it using acrylic panels, the Mayhem vents and some dinoc.

Was only saying about the dualy dude - that review doesnt show all of the games where its had our CPU/Mobo tests but Wraith did find a few games that prefered being gang banged with cores.

Its a cracking chip for the money though, makes me remember the days of abusing the E2140's & E2160's

If they unlocked an I3 they could see an end to AMD. I don't know why they don't, or won't, maybe they're afraid of being fined for monopoly.

Not that even an unlocked I3 could trouble a well threaded AMD but the issue is threading. We're still in 2007 when it comes to gaming threading. Ridiculous really.

I mean my Mac is clocked to 2ghz on all 8 cores and scores over twice the score of a 4670k clocked to 4.5ghz !

Good old 'nix, but Windows falls far behind.

Is it Pascal that's going to allow you to use 8 GPUs no matter who makes them and leave the CPU alone completely?

So yeah I'm really not worried about the CPU. All technology and software now points to not even needing one (well, not literally lmao !) could always wedge a potato in the socket :D

I just want a tiny wee rig that wraps around the GPU. The Silverstone FT03 mini is out because I would need the case (£90 or so) PSU (£90 or so) and an AIO (£30 or so) and financially it doesn't make any sense next to the Hadron.

Will continue to look....

I did find this one with an MSI 280. Could probably look up that size on the internet and compare to the Titan but even if you can the question remains if you should :p

What about the Ncase?

The Pentium G3258 has a special place in my heart now, it's a stonking chip, whack it up to 4.0Ghz and it will nail just about any game you throw at it. But I did find recently it is suffering. i.e FC4, BF4, Arma III, Dying light and Assassins Creed 4 really do need that little bit of help i.e Hyper threading or more cores. It's the only reason I moved on to the i5 4440 for a while, with the need for extra Blender rendering power and the up coming Witcher III and GTA V.

Pentium should be a complete and total failure. But the apps and games are so poor that the Pentium can still mix it. Amazing how slowly threading is happening. Shame for AMD tbh but their mid range chips are still selling well (like the 6300 etc).

It's actually quite shameful but devs are just sooo sodding lazy these days. If I took my Pentium into my mac territory and started video editing it would fall flat on its face, but due to crap Windows apps and games it should be more than enough.

PIC SNIP.

Any idea on the specific model? Titan would definitely fit in there.....

So true, in single core performance the g3258 was awesome. I know what you mean with the 6300 I had a FX4100 and was blown away by it, great chip for the price.
