should I go ahead with the 6950 2gb crossfire or should i go with the single 580? the 580 is also cheaper. tempertures arent a problem as ill be doing watercooling

Single EVGA 580

Single cards are always supported, sometimes scaling is bad with two. Either way the 580 is the way to go

If you're keeping things long term (5 years+) then get two 6950s. If you're gonna upgrade every few months get the 580

If I was to get the 6950's i could easily run games on full settings and still sit at a nice 90fps+ and 180 fps + on black ops, and i would not need to upgrade for atleast 1 year... If i would get the gtx 580 then that would still allow me to play games on top settings without problems but i would most likely end up upgrading to sli in the next 5 months... Looks like ill go with the gtx 580 which means when i do go sli the performance will be unbalievable.

Save up for a 590 and only use half the slots?

i want a crossfire setup for one reason, GPU death least with xfire or sli if one goes you got a backup untill you can replace the broken one or replace both if they are not made anymore.

plus bragging rights....

I think 1 big card > bragging rights then 2 small cards

For example, sli 560 less bragging rights then a 590, but both are good setups,

But i see what u mean about having a back up (although I would just hope it does break

GPU death is not such an issue imo, especially if you have a second pc or laptop. Most companies will deliver a new GPU the next day, so missing out on about 12 hours of PC use is not so much.

SLI/Xfire setups can be cheaper in the short term, and deliver higher fps, but in the long term, they need more power, and create more heat, so as ever sacrifices are made.

I would go for the 580 over a 6870 Xfire setup, and I did, even if I sacrifice some performance and some money.
