X99 or Z170 for sli 1080s and third video card

I am currently running sli 1080s and was thinking of upgrading from my Gigabyte Z77-UD5H and 3770K to ether a x99 or Z170 motherboard but I run three monitors, sli is focused on the center 1440p 165hz monitor the side screens being secondary screens for watching twitch, youtube, temps ect.
I want to be able to run the two 1080s in sli to run the primary display and a old 780 to run the secondary screens, I used to do this on X58 not with 1080s obviously. Currently there is a fps hit whenever twitch or youtube is playing on one of the secondary screens while running a GPU intensive game on the primary screen.
So I guess my question is am I forced to use X99 and a 40 PCI express lane cpu to accomplish this, also a secondary question is possible to also run a bootable m.2 drive along with all of the above. (I know there are separate lanes for m.2 drives ect on Z170)

Seems like money isn't the biggest concern.. so definitely the X99 platform. You get much more out of it when paired with SLI 1080s

Awesome been using mine for awhile now and it's never missed a beat so far touch wood and i can say out of all the drives that I've used this one has been the best

I'm in a similar situation.

I'm currently on the z97 platform with Asus rog formula, i7 4970k and 980ti...

I'm been considering a platform change to x99 Rampage 10th edition paired with 6850k maybe 6900k and another 980ti for sli while I have the funds to do so.

Reason for this is its my last ever possible upgrade and I want to get the most out if it for as long as possible.

Just debating weather it would be worth going x99 or just adding another 980ti to my current pc.

Thoughts?

Ps sorry for the thread hijack lol

If you have got the funds go for X99 as it will have the performance and a very long service life.

If you get the Rampage 10th edition it is a fantastic board (I have 2 of them) but Asus should give out sunglasses as the lighting effects can be interesting. Fortunately if you don't like RGB lighting you can turn it off.

That's what I was thinking.

After this final upgrade im going to hang up my screwdriver and retire.

Just need to decide on how much ram.... I don't like empty slots so I'm thinking 2x 16gb kits of 4 to fill 8 slots lol

As for the lights I'm not big on the RGB either so will either be white or turned off completely.

Dumb question, but how so?...

6, 8 and 10 core CPUs tend to last a lot long than intels latest 4 core mainstream i7

The boards on X99 are very tough too. The Rampage boards I use are built for very heavy overclocking use and will put up with things other boards won't.

Would/does this apply to my 5820K and ASUS X99 Strix board as well?

Yes. All of Intel's X sockets are made to be around for years. Think about how many boards and sockets they've released since X58 that are not X. Since X58 we've had X79 and X99, that's it.

TBH if I had a X58 board with a half decent hex core Westmere that overclocks reasonably I wouldn't have bothered with all of the stuff in between. Sure the 980x was expensive at launch but it's still hanging in there now, all these years later.
