WTF is a 6790?

Why is AMD competing against the 550? the 5770 already beats it and it is around the same price and for a little extra you can get a 6850. I don't see the point in the 550 as it is and why AMD is competing with it when they already have it beaten.

EDIT: the 5770 is around the same performance and is cheaper. Cheapest 550 I found was £123 cheapest 5770 was £100. Considering the 550 is ~£125 and the 6850 ~£140 why would you even think about the 550.

But if it's in competition with the 550 which is only 2 or 3 FPS better than the 5770 then the 6790 isn't going to be much better. according to the article Karlos linked it will be £100 which would make it the better buy but I expect Nvidia will drop the price of the 550 when the 6970 is released.

As I said before there are already cards in that price range that have the same performance give or take 2 or 3 FPS which you wouldn't even be able to notice the difference between. So I don't see the point in either card it seems a waste in releasing cards that have hardly any performance gain over cards that are already exist.

what if it is better?(15-20 fps or so better) no one knows till release

well we will have to wait and see but i won't be holding my breathe.

yea itd be total fail if they released it and all it was was a model number change

, and why does it use 2 six pins?

Yeah, i was wondering about the two six pins because it says that it has a TDP under 150W

Surely a 4 pin or one six pin is more than enough.

The Radeon HD 6790 will be more powerful than a Radeon HD 5770, at a lower price than Radeon HD 6850.

i'd like to know how much less because a 6850 is £140 and a 5770 is £100 so it would have to be in between £100 - £140. Unless there are going to be price drops for the 5770 it must be going up for ~£120 which still seems a waste when £20 extra gets you a 6850.

But if there are price drops and for arguments sake say they drop the 5770 to ~£85 and the charge £110 for the 6790 then things could be interesting seen as it will be faster and cheaper than a 550 also making the 5770 much cheaper than a 550 with around the same performance. It will be good to see how Nvidia responds as well.

Something that does wind me up about AMD is the pricing. Nvidia seem to have clear price breaks. The 550 TI is about £115 ~ £135. 560 TI about £200. GTX 570 £300. GTX 580 £400 ~ £500. GTX 590 £600. Ok, just checked these prices on Scan and there is some overlap between the pimped out 560 and reference 570 but those prices are about right.

But with AMD cards there's only £2 difference between the gigabyte 6850 OC and the XFX 6870 with the duel fan cooler. A £10 difference between a MSI 6870 (mint cooler I know) and a XFX 6950 with, again a duel cooler (not the best but could be SO much worse). Admittedly there are then bigger gaps between the 6850 and 6870, and then the 6870 and 6990.

I know it seems a bit daft complaining about competitive prices but this kinda bugs me because, (not complaining about this coming part) I don't have the money to be over indulgent in my purchases and have to stick to a budget (complaining about this coming part) and the prices being this close stops me feeling 100% satisfied with my purchase because you can't help but this well for X more I could have had an 6XXX instead (glum face, goes frag some other n00b to make himself feel better).

Just my thoughts. Some will know what I'm on about, some will think I've lost the plot.

tell me about it...

i bought my 5850 vapor-X for £???

a week later the 6850 was released and it was £45 cheaper, and better. it don't figure. (lesson learnt)

I just love to see the war between Nvidia and AMD, there is always something better you could have gotten for that little extra. With the 6790 and 550 they are entering where there isn't really any competition and depending on the price of the 6790 we could well see some price drops from AMD which Nvidia will have to respond to. I just like to see how it plays out because while they are competing against each other with cards and prices we benefit from it.

i mean if the price of the 550 drops to about 120 (going by our guesses)

2 of em for 240 (idk what currency im doing this in lmfao)

= one kick ass cheap setup

and if the 6790 is as cheap i might be tempted to go to the red team

(although having a nvidia gpu helps alot in premiere cs5)
