Bikes 2017 and a build log for my Quadangle.

My black one came off my red Burner from 87' and my green one I bought 15 years ago from a little shop which is now gone.

Wicked thanks ! so that does date them to the 80s then. Guy found this pic earlier..

lwRbKWR.jpg

Which was an 80s advert and the 2 is there with the 1. 1 was better looking IMO but beggars can't be choosers :D

Edit. That number is the year. I asked on the museum and a guy who used to supply them said -

I'm close to 100% that the 84 is an SR (Sakae Ringyo) date code. Yes, SR was one of Tioga's suppliers.

The number 2 is the month. A guy I know has one with 84 on it and a 1 where my 2 is. Indicating January 84.

OK so I decided to do a quick mock up before it goes in for powder on Tuesday. Not sure how long it will take (how long is a piece of string?) but at least I know I have done all of my groundwork before I commit.

Seat post shim was a fail. I am not going to whack the post in with a hammer because it would never come out. So I am going to have to try and do something about that, but not too worried about it ATM.

Really takes me back looking at those pics. Way back....

Looks stunning, are you tempted to just take it around the block? Not even a little?

Oh yeah man deffo getting ridden. I have never owned a bike ever that I did not ride. I won't ride it a lot because it has a 18" top tube which is ridiculous and I will likely look like the Michelin man riding a 3-5 year olds bike but yeah, deffo taking it out :)

And.

Sadly I had a bit of a nightmare with the pedals. I bought these.

9LcG4H9.jpg

Intending to strip the anodising with caustic soda. However, firstly they were not anodised they were bloody painted (as I found out after an hour of waiting) and then when I did strip one with a Dremel wire brush it turns out the traps are cast.

itJdLvt.jpg

Meaning no amount of polishing means I can just use this on them.

hMMOCka.jpg

So I have to paint them first with this.

L62JUw9.jpg

Which kinda bums tbh. Ah well, not much I can do about it so no point crying over it :)

Once the Burner is finished I am moving onto my dream bike, this. It's the same frame they used in the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Using some of the parts from this. I bought this at a ridiculously low price the other day (£269) but it was way too short to become a rider.

5E6wT26.jpg

It was a £500 bike in 2013. I got it for £269, after I ordered a all red one and they didn't have it. I have learned a very valuable lesson lately.. Buy complete bikes from a couple of years ago. £269 for the whole thing.. As an example of why I did that look at this.

s7UTu8C.jpg

That is one wheel and hub. A pair of those wheels (they are like top end) would cost you £250 just for the wheels. I used the wheels and sprocket (worth £30 on its own) on my yellow quad as I have been wanting sealed bearing hubs since the day I built it.

tJU2OAK.jpg

I had rode the yellow Quad all summer and it was dirty, few things were loose etc. So I switched out the wheels with the crap that were on there. Oh yeah, I also stole the rear brake from the Sunday bike (Odyssey Springfield, worth about £35). So I have had in excess of £300 worth of parts from it already.

Lesson learned, man. Don't buy parts, buy full bikes !

So not only do I have most of it left but I also yanked this from it.

NYdcRdf.jpg

White Odyssey 3 pc crank. Worth £75 ATM used on Ebay. It's going on the GT with the Crupi disc I switched out on the yellow Quad.

Update :) and a catch up !

Fitted the 1 1/8 - 1.5" adapter for the fork.

Fitted the fork into the headset.

Then I ordered the bars, GT Fullerton stem in black and some lock on grips.

Yesterday I ordered everything else I will need. Chain.

XHiIVgs.jpg

14t freewheel (42/14)

tmrsrDE.jpg

Which thankfully I can fit due to FF hub. Got me a nice left handed V brake lever for the brake as the ones I have are all right handed (bloody yanks :D )

gTfj5hd.jpg

Marin 27.2/350 seat post.

oJdD4AM.jpg

And some brake pads. I wanted the longer ones as they grip better on Vs I found.

Once all that turns up I should be ready to build :) Only thing I have to do is take the ano off of the 5mm Vocal spacer I have for the headset. Will tackle that later :)

"Come Fly With Me".

Yes, it is absolutely freezing and the winds are up. Let's go for a ride !

3 miles to the pier and it was "money shot" time.

ANTayUq.jpg

3 miles standing up, 80 PSI tyres. Progress... It's a flying machine.

For life, not just for Christmas.

rLsxzi2.jpg

And then I got a rough idea of what hell feels like. The sun was gone and the winds were up. On the way out I rode standing with the wind behind me and the sun on my face. It was wonderful. On the way back? it was freezing, riding into the wind standing up. The seat does not go high enough to ride sitting down because you have to lift your knees so high it is harder on your legs than standing.

I made it though. Sat down soaking in sweat and then the endorphin came.. Bloody hell, it's been a long time since I felt that kind of euphoria.

Three days ago I would have disagreed but then 4c and today 1c. Yeah, I draw the line right about there.

I am now about to build bike number 6. A proper, 1980s freestyle bike. One of the best, actually. Will post about that a bit later today :)

Blimey, I have a ton to update huh? Obviously I have not been riding because the weather has been total arse. It's finally gotten a bit sunny over the past few days, but due to the lack of cloud cover it's also balls freezing. I originally built my 1987 Hutch Exel like this.

QFv0FSP.jpg

Which was a Christmas present to myself (my first 80s freestyle bike into the collection) but I hated it. I figured going with pink parts would be 80s, but then when it was done I felt stupid. So, not to be defeated I cracked some spare parts out of the cupboard and....

hp8NWRz.jpg

Badass. Just need to repaint the pegs I have and I will have some fun on that come spring time.

Also over Christmas I have been buying parts for my cherished GT Speed Series. I originally built it on the cheap (around £400, if that) and have been buying parts over Christmas and so on. This is how it was..

ANTayUq.jpg

Most of it was high end but the wheels were cheap at less than £40. They are by no means bad (Alex Y22 double wall deep dish rims on decent alloy hubs) but they were not the killer wheelset this bike deserves. So I spent weeks looking and finally found these for £100 inc for the pair.

pkczITL.jpg

fEV2I3H.jpg

Now let me explain what I mean by "killer" wheel set. BMX parts are generally quite cheap. However, going to the top end is quite the opposite. Let me break down what they would cost.

Rear rim - Proper Bike Co (Carlo Griggs) £70
Rear hub - Salt + Trapez (named so because you can flip the pawls and put your crank on the left) - £135

Front rim - Shadow Orbis - £70
Front hub - Spotlight Superstar - £125.

And then of course you add the spoke prices and cost to build.. Yeah, very not cheap. So the price I got them for was amazing. Only the rear hub was used (but refurbed) the rest was all NOS. Only one problem, they are micro drive. Firstly I bought these for them.

1tBGP9a.jpg

And these bar ends, which cost too much but are drop dead gorgeous.

v0tShye.jpg

Snafu cable.

VFQOAgZ.jpg

And so on. I bought this 25t sprocket originally.

csK8nRa.jpg

But the chain rubbed the frame when you pedalled backward. So I bought a 30t Proper Bike Co in copper finish to match the decal stroke.

TE2q5BY.jpg

Is how it sits. It just needs air in the tyres and so on. However, then I saw these for sale.

IXXHb21.jpg

And well, you know how it goes lol. I had to have them.

Glad to see you're keeping busy, and get riding those upgrades. :) Bought myself a new wheelset for my cyclocross bike over xmas. Only cheap at £100, but enables me to have a slick wheelset & a knobbly one, depending on what I feel like riding.

Quite a lot of updates, but tales of woe also. So basically I built my GT with the high end wheels and micro drive.

22nNPOG.jpg

£500 I spent on it over Xmas. However, sadly it was not meant to be and for multiple reasons the GT is not compatible with micro drive. I just had to accept it in the end, and source a new rear wheel. Not easy, as all 36h hubs these days are cassette 9t. In the end I settled for a MTB hub that I did an axle conversion on.

lE6KiLr.jpg

^ before, and after. It has been centred and balanced for a 110mm dropout now.

qwdo8WC.jpg

Might need some minor tweaks, but it is ready to be laced to the rim I got for it.

KYvaWOy.jpg

So that is where that sits. I am also doing a new build, in honour of one of the UKs best vert riders ever to live (and a local lad, so he is going to sign the frame for me) Carlo Griggs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvg9dHnhgkg&t=535s

That was from the 80s, here he is again during the 90s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_wVnTX2ASA

That ramp there is built on an arcade roof (that his brother owns) over in Pagham, about two miles from me.

So Carlo runs Proper Bike Co so I decided to buy as many Carlo parts as I could. Proper Brick Sh*t House

Christ it's been a while. Last year I built two bikes.

2007 Terrible One Ruben Alacantra.

LiSEYXF.jpg

And a 2001 Standard STA 500

aHgQFdv.jpg

I rode the STA all summer. I also bought a Haro Dave Mirra Pro (the tribute model)

YBWCnUF.jpg

Which is still sitting new in the box. I started working on the loft at my mother's.

rm88duC.jpg

Got all the flooring down etc. Currently working on this bike. 2001 S&M Dirt Bike Next Generation.

I65kjPq.jpg

It's getting a bare metal resto. I also have this and all of the parts for it that also needs restoring.

06kUP49.jpg

2001 Fatboy. I also bought this frame last week.

2Ao1vTe.jpg

Which I also have parts for. So the collection is coming on strong now. Got rid of a couple of bikes and decided to cap the collection at 2008 (apart from the Mirra, because that was done when he died) so that's a collector's piece any way.

Am about to put my rider back together too.

llxe5mT.jpg

Last year I fitted carbon cranks, carbon post and a new seat. Seat looks horrid though. Got a new one waiting and some carbon bars too, but need to remove the front axle and fit a skewer because it's so bloody big.

I'll be out on that next week.
