Windows XP SP3 Read-Only Folders

Lo all,

Having a prob, all my shared folders are read-only. I set them as not read-only and apply, then ok; and then when I go back into Properties, they are read-only again!

I think this is why I cannot access the shard folders from my laptop across the network.

Can anyone help? I really need to be able to access my desktop from my laptop!

Did you have the folder sharing working on XP SP2 and installing SP3 has stopped it working, or are you trying to set it up from scratch og XP SP3?

What exactly is the problem? Are the folders showing up when you browse for them, but you cannot access them or can you not even browse to them?

It worked fine on SP2. I then formatted and installed windows, then SP3 on both the desktop and laptop. I think it might be SP3 related, because my gf has the same issue on her laptop now after installing SP3.

I can go into each folder, but as soon as there is a file in a folder it will freeze and I cannot open the file.

Right, just had a look at my setup now i am home, my server (which contains my "network drive") is running XP SP3, and my laptop is running XP SP2, so is my game PC i *think*.

Looking at the properties of my folders they are read only and greyed out and if you un-tick it, it re-ticks itself when you go back in, so i don't think this is your problem.

Have you got "allow network users to change my files" ticked on the sharing tab? Having it unticked allows users to view folders but they can't do anything with the files in them.

I'm struggling to think of any other things that will allow you to view the folders but not open the files, i will have a play around with my server see if i can find anything.

All my folders are shared with write and read access. I am stumped. Spent so long on google and there doesn't seem to be a fix apart from the one on the Microsoft website that did not work.

Well after a lot of trail and error, I found the problem to be in the settings of my NIC. I had set it to 100mps Full Duplex, and changing it to Auto solved all my problems. I can now access and edit files on my desktop from my laptop (even though the folders are "Read Only"). Why arn't PC's just simple lol.
