Windows XP Crashes

My friend's commputer was making a loud buzzing sound, he says its been happened for a long time, and he said he wanted us the fix it, so we get some q-tips and start cleaning the dust off of the cpu fan, which is what it was from.

once the cleaning is done, the sound stops, however, whenever we try and boot the PC, after the windows loadin screen, with the little bar going across. even in safe mode, we come to the BSoD, which says

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Help would be greatly apreciated!

You did disconnect the power lead before doing the clean up didn't you?

It might be that your "boot.ini" got messed up somehow.

First off though, check all the cables between the mobo and drive are secure, you may have tugged them during the clean up.

If everything is ok there you can try a repair by booting from the XP CD. When you see the Welcome screen, press R. Then at the DOS prompt type chkdsk /p then press return.

When that's finished type fixboot Then press enter. When asked press Y and then enter.

When it's all finished type exit then press enter. Windows should now boot.

If that didn't do the trick:

Boot from the XP CD to the recovery console, as described above, then type chkdsk /r

This may take a bit longer but when it's finished type exit and press enter Windows should then boot ok.

You may need to select boot from Hard Drive at first because the XP CD will still be in the drive. Once you're into Windows you can remove it.

Hope that little lot helps.;)

Apart from thinking the thread title is just a valid statement, or product description..

Yeah try StickyMick`s thingies, it`s more than likely a mbr related incident.

Noises and stuff don`t sound good tho. Backup (while u can) - buy a new one - re-install.

yea thanks sticky micky

it fixed the problem, the fan was just full of dust and going at full speed, so everything is fine now, thx!!
