Windows 10 installation?

Hey guys,

So I'm sure many of you will be a bit annoyed by this and say Google it... which I have done, but there are sooo many different articles on how to do this, that it did my head in.

How is the proper way of installing Windows 10, to avoid any potential issues that users have experienced around the web?...

As far as my knowledge goes, you should do a clean install of Windows 10, that is like the "must" thing to do... or am I wrong?.

And what does these "N" mean on for example Wraith's "Windows 10 Pro N"?...

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chrazey

The best way to go about it IF this is a first time install is you MUST upgrade First so install 7-8-8.1 then upgrade to Windows 10 this then registers your PC with Microsoft once all that is done you can then format and reinstall 10 and you will then have a nice fresh install or to bypass all that just buy a Windows 10 key or software and do a clean install that way

The 'N' in my edition just means it didn't come with media player or the codec packs, which are free to download from MS website and install later. It meant that when I bought Win 10 it was £25 cheaper.

So you bought yours and didn't upgrade?...

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...0A-F58590B5DF7B/v2.0/MediaCreationToolx64.exe

Clicking on the link above will start an automatic download. Use this tool to upgrade to W10(only from W7 SP1 or W8.1). After doing so, make sure your key is activated by going to start menu-->settings-->update and security(last one)-->activation. It should say it's activated(need to be connected to internet so it activates).

After confirming it is. use the tool I linked above again and create a USB bootable drive and install W10 that way.

Before doing all this just a few things to note.
1) BACKUP your data(music, pictures, videos, etc) on an external drive if you need/want to.
2) Make sure you select the correct OS(32bit or 64bit), which for you is more than likely 64bit. Also make sure you know if you have W7/8.1 Home or W7/8.1 Ultimate/Pro versions. If you have home, select home when upgrading and fresh install. If Ultimate/Pro, then Select Pro for W10.
3) Don't overthink anything. You will probably come back and ask a zillion questions, it's super easy and straightforward. Just do it!

I used the link above and when starting it, a box popped up saying that the installation didn't work and to reboot the system ....

The issues are at random, you either get lucky or you don't. Since November if you have certain versions of 8.1 you can just use that as a key for 10. See this for more info. A clean install is least likely to cause issues.

N is also the 'EU friendly' version (IIRC) as there was a lawsuit from someone complaining that IE and other built in microsoft products had an unfair edge by being bundled with the OS. Thats also why if you install a copy of Windows 7 it'll have that 'browser choice' crap.

In Europe Microsoft had to add that starting with Windows 7, I think it's to do with EU Law. and i think Mozilla & Opera had something to do with it
