wifi booster/extender

well my friend is going to be taking a spare room in my house but is complaining about the wifi signal being week in his room.

my router and internet stuff is located in my garage because it was out the way there and was easy place to route all the cables to from the bedrooms and office in the house.

the garage is at the front of the house on the right hand side and the bedroom my friend is going to have is at the back of the on the left hand side. he get one bar of wifi signal in his room and 20mbps download speed with 17mbps upload, im in the room on the right and when/if i use wifi i get one bar of signal but get 29 to 23mpbs download and 17mbps upload. in the bathroom which is above the garage you get four bars of signal and around 41mpbs download speed

he started out saying the he wanted to just use his phone and tablet with the wifi so the above speed in my veiw would have been but he then turns rounds and says he now wants to use the ps4 with the wifi to. he now in turn wants to move all the router stuff closer to get better signal from it which is a fair amount of hassle as all the ethernet cables are under the floor etc.

dont me wrong wifi is good for surfing the net and sending emails etc when your chilling out on the bed or out in the garden in the summer etc but other than that id not really be to worried if i did not have wifi at all. i could live without it for sure and have really only just started using it now and agin for simple things.

so my question is will a wifi booster/extender help to improve things to a good level that i wont need to move all my router stuff and if so any ideas on which one to go with

Powerline Adapter? he can hook the ps4 up then using ethernet cable, and use wifi for everything else.

thats not possible sadly as the garage is on a different fuse board to the rest of the house. other wise this would have been a cheap ish and easy fix

You could also get a bigger antenna for your router (if you can swap antenas on your router).

im not 100% sure you can but ill check just in case

You could get a wifi repeater

do you have any recommendations?

thanks for the advice people

my mate turned up yesterday with a lump of cat 6 cable so ended up ripping most of flooring up in my house yesterday and adding another ethernet cable to the room for the ps4 but still need to order the bits to sort the wifi out as my friend is convinced that 20mbps wont be fast enough to surf the net, use youtube etc on a mobile phone or tablet

my internet is out while i change providers i'm using my phones 3g for everything and that stills about 2 - 3 Mb/s, i've even been playing the destiny beta on it. so 20/30 would be more than enough.

I just upgraded my speed from 15mbps to 25mbps, surfing internet and watching videos the speed difference was negligible. My laptop which is mainly what I use my wifi for is only capable of 20mbps anyway. He is just whining too much in my opinion.

yes i agree its not worth messing around with when you already 20mbps but i think because he dose not know to much about it and on a wired connection i get 55mbps download and 16mbps upload he just thinks thats whats needed to make it work.

Totally not worth it at all i'm gaming on my xbox on the 4 Mbps in the screen shot, the only reason he could argue is that he wants a solid connection as wifi can (though not offen) drop the connection.

If I were you, Id tell him to get his own router/repeater if he isn't happy. Its your house anyway ;) Just my opinion

this would work too :P

the speed will be fine, wifi or no wifi, the only thing id want to be hardwired or powerlined for is to drop the ping, the only reason he would need more speed is if he wants to download tonnes of stuff.

And what was wrong with cat 5e or is your house like a mile long, and at the end of the cable just get a cheap n150 or n300 cable router he can configure it as an access or point of have his own wifi then with his own pass word, so his devices wont glog up your own router.

:D

thanks for the help/input people.

think its sorted now, just went down the route of putting in another ethernet cable and letting him deal/sort out the wifi
