Which AMD R9 390 Should I Get

Hey all,

I have 2 options i could sell the GTX970 and the money from that i could get a GTX980 or just get a AMD R9 390.

The two GPU's i'm looking at is the Sapphire Radeon R9 390 Nitro Tri-X 8GB or XFX Radeon R9 390 Double Dissipation 8GB the reason why i'm looking at these two is cause of the Reference PCB unless all of the R9 390's have the Reference PCB one of the reasons why i like Sapphire one is cause of the two 8 pin power and it would make the build look cleaner, Is there another one i'm over looking.

Thanks all

If you could get a 980, you could also get a 390x???

If its between a 390 and a 980, well tbh the 980 is faster. You could wait till the 380x comes out if you aren't in a rush and went to cash some money in.

The best 390s are the MSI and the Nitro. The only 2x8pin 390 is the Nitro. MSI isn't reference though. So looks like the Nitro is the card for you..

The Sapphire & XFX use the same amount of power the only difference i can see is the Sapphire is using 2 x 8 pin & the XFX is using 1 x 6 pin & 1 x 8 pin, with the Sapphire i need to find out if it's the one with the backplate cause Sapphire has two version of the 390's.

The only reason why i'm only looking at the Sapphire & XFX cause i would like to water cool the GPU down the track after i buy the EK 360mm AIO cooler.

The is a reason why i'm looking at the AMD this time is cause of the 8GB of memory that will come in handy for Modded Skyrim or any game that can be Modded.

well i went for a MSI 390, though they dont have a reference PCB i will try and play with universal waterblocks and see what it gives ^^ that way i can keep the shroud which made me love MSI.

But if you want a full waterblock i'd go for a XFX because they tend to be the cheapest of them all

I know the MSI 390 does rate highly but i'm only looking at reference PCB models, Like i said in a earlier post i would like to water cool it from what i have learn the reference PCB models are the easiest to W/C.

The last time i looked the Sapphire was the cheapest it beat the XFX bye $20 now looks like the have took the price down bye $20.

TBH i like the Sapphire more than the XFX, now if the XFX was like the 200 series XFX cards then my choice would be even harder.

Sapphire Radeon R9 390 Nitro Tri-X 8GB $499
XFX Radeon R9 390 Double Dissipation 8GB $499

it idd is the easiest way to WC and ah my bad, over here XFX is the cheapest one so far ^^ well than its up to you, either way the shroud wont make any difference because you'll put a block on it anyway. Which brand do you trust most :D

TBH i have never owned a Sapphire card before and the only XFX card i ever own was like a $100-$150 card.

I had an XFX 8600 GTS (it had dog tags I think Company of Heroes was included) Didn't have any problems at all in the couple of years I ran it. I don't think they do NVidia any more but yeah it was ten years ago so companies change so much it's probably not even relevant.

No experience with Sapphire but the Trixx software seems to be the goods. A couple of guys here have mentioned it but can't recall who. The cards look solid.

The XFX in standard trim looks nicer imho and has a backplate (I can't see one on the sapphire) but if you're going to water block them it's not that much of a difference overall.

I think you'd be happy either way.

Sapphire has two versions of the 390's, The thing i like about the Sapphire card is not only it has 2x8pins but it reminds me of a EVGA card i know they kinda look nothing really alike but i think it's more of the colour scheme, I think i'm more ready for a stealth looking card.

The only XFX i did own was back in 2010 it was XFX Radeon HD 5670 it was $135.00 i wasn't completely happy with it i think like within 6 months i sold it.

Sounds like your decisions been made then - Sapphire with the backplate it is :)

I had a look on PCCG but can't see if the $499 one has the backplate or not. No photo probably indicates there isn't one.

Yeah, If you look at the Sapphire website you will see the one with the backplate listed on the website so i will need to phone PCCG to see the one they have.

SAPPHIRE NITRO R9 390 8G with back plate 1040 MHz
SAPPHIRE NITRO R9 390 8G D5 1010 MHz

I owned two Sapphire 7970's and they were pretty decent cards so I think you will be quite happy with your purchase

Yep i'm hoping so, But once you get up into this price range i don't think there is much difference between AMD & Nvidia plus i have never own a $500 AMD GPU before.

I still can't get my new GPU cause the person hasn't left me feedback for the item that i sold it's getting annoying they had the item now for over 8 days and nothing.

That sounds dodgy?

I know, but that is what some people are like on ebay they just don't leave feedback, I don't think there is much i can do is to just wait, I do have the money tho, I'm not that silly to post the item without getting the money first ^_^

Some buyers have told me "I don't have to leave Feedback"

You don't. It's super annoying but you aren't required too.

Being an owner of Sapphire cards I can honestly say "yes they are that good" I just love my vapor X and i wouldn't part with it for the sexiest supermodel out there
