Did your old psu go with a pop or a wimper? It could just be an internal fuse that's gone. If you are going to open it up to check - make damn sure it's discharged before touching anything! There's enough capacitive energy in a just switched off psu to seriously hurt.
As you've probably discovered, just because it says 1000W on the tin doesn't mean it is capable of it, unless it's made by Ronseal, but they don't make power supplies...
As for those wattage calculators, they usually err on the side of caution with about 20% redundancy.

i just think that a 1500 unit is just power your paying to get but wont be, so there is not real point 
if you want to spend money spend it on a better make that way is win win hope your happy with your choice

Seasonic is probably the best choice, xfx is just a seasonic in a different shell so if you like the look of it you could easily get that and that leaves corsair which is also high quality.

well id say go for the 1.2KW corsair AX or which ever one is the platinum grade one. but i like the corsair brand. but you could look into it. and im sure others have good suggestions
