Weird things happening in vista

Hey there

I've recently upgraded my friends rig with some new parts. But when i tried to boot up with his old hard drive, we couldn't get into windows. The repair tool ran but it didn't help.

We got some code names i hope will help:

The only old part from his pc was the harddrive all other things were new. The parts are:

Intel Core i5-4460

'HyperX Fury 8gb 1600mhz ddr3

Seagate Barracuda 1 tb ( not with os)

Some old WD harddrive with the OS

212 evo cooler

Gigabyte gtx 750ti

Corsair RM450

asus h81i-plus

Yeah you can use the old one. You just need to do a clean reinstall of it. Do they have the cd key for it?

No its a very old pc, so i think he needs a new copy of windows 7.

Unfortunately, with Windows 7 and older, when changing chipsets, or swapping from amd to intel or vice verca you will be often be greeted with bsod on startup or errors in windows. The easiest way to fix it is to reinstall windows, although there's other ways of preparing win 7 for new components but that's more advanced and may not 100% work and it involves booting from other operating system.

What may also cause the problems, is that on your friends old pc, windows was installed using IDE configuration, and if the new motherboard automatically defaults the hard drive configuration to ACHI, windows will encounter errors.

If thats the problem, go in the bios and if the hard drive configuration is set to AHCI then change it to IDE and see if it works then. if not then you probably will have to reinstall windows on your friends PC

if you feel confident enough try this with the old hardware in (when it reboots shut it down quickly then swap out the hardware)

download Magic Jelly Bean and find your install key for windows from that and make a note of it.

open run command (off start menu, if you do not see it, hold down the windows key and press R)

type in or copy and paste the following

sysprep.exe /oobe /generalize

this will churn away for a while then reboot, it will then present itself to re-setup windows when it has rebooted.

**Note and disclaimer**

Make sure you have your stuff backed up as it will create a new user account

anything lost or damage made to windows install using this is your own responsibility

once back in windows and you are back at a desktop and you have created your new user account, you can go into the users folder and copy over the old stuff you want to keep to new user folder (open 2 explorer Windows and windows key + left arrow on one of them and windows key + right arrow on other window to line them up side by side on screen)

Hope this helps and solves your issues although getting windows 7 or a vista disk and doing a clean install is advised though as the registry will still be clogged up using this method and is not the prefered choice where possible, this is to remove drivers and generalise a windows setup ready for deployment across several machines in a production / office / school / university workplace.

out of the 5 times i used sysprep.
once it failed to boot, so i had to do a clean install any way.
i do like sysprep and try to use it any time i change mother board. but it does have "from my experience" 20% chance of not working. (i have only ever used it with windows 7 x64)

it does keep your old user account by the way. you just have to make a new one when it sets up. once your in the new one you can restart load up your old user account then delete the new one you just made. i never had to move any thing.
But it is recommended to back up.
i would also back up my registry, that way if i did have to reinstall because sysprep messed up. i could move my files back to relative folders and run the reg back up. This could leave some apps needing to be reinstalled any way. but most of them should be good.
