Watercooled Desk Project

Great job PBaines,
I think the cabling looks fine the way you have it.
Like Mgutierrez33 said , it would make maintaining the system a little easier.
The only alternative would be cutting holes in your beautiful wood work and either tying them up or making a thin cable box under the desk , but then you would be hiding half of those nice cables.

Oh. My. Gawd.!

Could you paint the back covers for the graphic cards orange as well?

That is a good idea! I just might, though it will be hard to find a perfect match for the orange that is there all ready, and I would rather not strip the current orange back on the PCI covers that I have right now
But yes, I will look into it and try some test pieces :)

Very nice.
I agree that routing the cables under the desk would look better but i think it still looks amazing.
Excellently braided cables

When I first started doing the custom wiring I initially thought that the cables would be 1:1 so I could then make the cables look super tidy. Though that was not the case at the end of the day and they came out a lot untidier than what I would have wanted..
If I do a Rev 2.0 for this desk I know what to fix ;)

I have to say I really don't like those black plastic clips all over the cables because it breaks the orange up.

Apart from that it's a really good use of space.

Don't worry man, I hate the clips too. I will keep them there for a few months so they train the cables. Then I can remove the clips and hopefully the wires stay as they were. That was the whole point of the clips. Just to train the cabkes

I dunno, I kinda like seeing the cabling like that. Also makes it easier to perform maintenance/upgrades in the future without it being any more of a hassle than it needs to be.

Even if I had the cables routed under the desk that would still be super easy to maintain. Once the rig is put together I shouldn't have to do any maintenance for about 6 months so don't really mind pulling everything to bits ^_^

Yeah, I would rather not cut up the nice timber that I have used, and as you say. The cables are for show so don't really want to hide them. However I just wish the cables were proper 1:1 !

You could paint the pieces already painted and the ones that aren't painted, so its the same color? :-)

Been bit busy with study lately, also have had my UP7 die on me so had to get that replaced too (and no, there was no water leak onto it or anything)

Anyways, for the water I am using it is just my tap water at home. Since I am on a farm I am just using rain water. But am boiling it just to get rid of any bacteria that may be in it just in case.

After the water had cooled down in went the pastel concentrate!
IMG_7669.jpg

After a mix, it went into my squeeze fill bottle
IMG_7670.jpg

All in the loop, don't think I quite like the colour of the pastel. Needs a bit of yellow dye to make it a bit more rich.

At this point I had done the loop, and went to fire up the desk but there was nuthin'. Was pretty pissed, this loop isn't the easiest thing to drain
But here is how it works,
With the tap fitting on the right of the res I just put some tube and that goes down the back which goes into a jug.

Once as much water as possible has drained I then use my other tap here, which is on the side of the radiator to blow the water out. This tap is also used for filling, I open it up when filling as it allows the loop to fill up with as less air as possible, and also lets me continuously fill it without having air bubbles blow up the tube.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

about 2 weeks after this had passed I had gotten my UP7 back and was ready to start the loop again.
However I wanted to do something about my 3770K. Mine is a pretty shit one, and can barely get stable at 4.4ghz and pumps out a shit ton of heat.
So, I delidded it, (vice method) and will be running it with no lid. to maximize cooling potential.

I set up the tubing again, and set my handy towels up. And yes, that is the old coolant there.
IMG_7710.jpg

Mixing up the coolant, here is a shot comparing the MDPC-X Orange to the Pastel Orange
IMG_7711.jpg

After about 55 drops of yellow dye, we got this colour, though not matching the MDPC-X sleeving, it is a pretty perfect colour to the Gigabyte Orange

And a crop photo comparing them (new colour on the right)
IMG_7713a.jpg

I started to fill the loop back up, and instantly saw a clear difference between the old coolant in the left res, and the new in the right. Hope it is clear in the photo's

The stickers on the side AF120 fans were upside down, though I should make those the right way around

Here are is the new loop. Looks great!

With the NZXT Led kit, it will be powered by a Fan header. Did this in an old build and never had any problems.

Here is full shot of the desk, the top draw is missing because it no longer fits. Why is that? well, I found that the desk was a bit too tall for my liking, so I took about 8cm off off it
So took 8cm off of the legs, and off of the draw carcass (got my mum to do the carcass for my while I was at uni so no pics off that bit) and will have to cut down the draw size to get it back in there. It'll be my pen draw ;)

Checking to make sure that the LED's are working (will get a night photo out tonight probably)

Thought I would show a size photo just to give some prospective. NOTE: I will not be using the top of the desk for my keyboard/mouse I will be making a keyboard tray this week some time (still have to figure out I will do it too) this photo was just for prospective.

This is really cool dude!
Must admit that I personally liked the darker orange coolant better though.

Also, when I look at the coolant in the tube res, I can't help but think that the desk isn't standing straight? Or is this because of me/ the picture/ the movement of the coolant?

Is it comfortable to use? ;)

Very nice PBaines,
I kind of agree with Feronix on the coolant though . I think the darker color matched the color of the cables and board better, but that's a personal preference I guess.
The color of the coolant may look different in person than it does in the pictures.
How did your delidding go? Were you able to get much more out of it?
