Watercooled Desk Project

Just before I start things off, this whole idea is all started from seeing Azurites build log, it inspired me to do something of my own; So thank you sir!!

But here are just a couple of concepts. Still planning atm, all constructive criticism is welcome.

Still around a month of planning first, i want this to be a perfect desk, and every idea considered

I take it you'll be having acrylic or glass on top?

If that's the case, why not hide the psu completely underneath the visible section? If it was mounted underneath the central section with the fan drawing air from underneath, you wouldnt see it, and you could do a really nice job with braided cabling, with it only coming up in the ideal places.

Also, I think the hard drives are too far away from the motherboard. Again, I'd prefer it if they were hidden away underneath, possibly leave the SSD visible but I just dont really like the look of hard drives

I think it would also look better if you had all the hardware in the middle section under glass, then a wood cover at the sides, maybe to create draws or compartments (maybe a place to hide the psu and hard drives). That would provide a little more functionality to the desk as well.

Only ideas obviously, and it'll look amazing whatever way you do it, just think it'll look better if things are slightly more compacted than massively spread out

obviously not too compacted, just not taking up the entire desk

some good idea's there James

I cant wait to see it start and play out PBaines. I wish I had room in my small pad to do something like this would be epic no doubt.

Right, so.

No air flow between first and second bay for airflow only to go in the rad bay to minimise heat dispersion into other bay CHECK

" " To keep most dust out of the main bay CHECK

have a fill and drain port in the loop CHECK

Have psu under the bay to hide cables CHECK

Hdd's are fine were they are, will just buy a 500mm sata data, and then crimp my own sata power

LOOP ORDER

RES>Pump>rad>Rad>CPU>GPU>Res

Final design, set to start next week :)
As far as the keyboard and mouse is concerned, that is a surprise, but all I can say is. It will not be on the desk, nor on a tray under the desk, surprise ;)

This will have PSU, HDD, and the front IO with the misc. cables that are needed in there

Why have something this big and limit the radiator space to that of a full size ATX tower...

As for the KB/M I'm guessing you're going to have a fancy recliner chair with a swivel board with the KB/M on the board?

I'd have a bunch of reservoirs and have the water going through all of them for even more movement in the centre, plus it will fill up that empty space a bit more.

Brian :w:

Love it, great to see another "Deskmodder" (thats right you have gone beyond being a casemodder, its like having a power level over 9000 ;) )going at it, I really like the design, only thing I would say is for extra points fo for copper or chrome/painted pipe instead of tubing thins there are no complex bands in you line routing. Other than that though I think its great, very clean and gives you alot of room to do some cool stuff with lighting or maybe expansion in the future (maybe a dedicated File/media server)

Maybe because that is all I will need? There will be a lot of air flow in there anyway, and with 2 radiators cooling cool components anyway, I don't think I would notice any temp differences if I were to make the cooling any better!

The KB/M answer is wrong :D :D :D :D

Thanks for that, will consider having more reservoirs, maybe even a custom original one ;)

If and when more stuff gets added, there's still plenty of room for more rads :P
You have any idea how long this will take to complete, because I for one can't wait to see this finished!

exactly! :D never have enough rads right? hehe

This should take around 3-4 months. Will start next week, as I have a 2 week school holiday. Then I have talked to my Building/Wood teacher and I can complete this at school! So will get the main chassis built over the next few weeks, then for the remaining 10 weeks, I will do the things like draws, and the compartments. With the mobo tray, and PCI outputs too :)

Sounds sweet to me. All I ever did in 'Tech' lessons was cut odd pieces of wood on a fret saw, because I was so darn bored. Glad to hear your school is far more accommodating than mine was :)

Right, final design set in concrete now, All criticism is always welcome though!

note that the rads I will be using are going to be 480mm radiators, and will get the thickest possible
This will also be a single loops, not dual. Tidier loop as a single, and not enough performance to worry about with the difference between the two.

Thank you to all who have helped me and given constructive feedback!
Timber is Native NZ Rimu, and will commence building this week!

So it begins!!

Conceptual design

Here is what the timber looks like. Is native NZ Rimu. Please excuse the end one with the bird poo, that will be sanded off in due course. bloody sparrows in the shed >.<

Cut some of the pieces to length of 650, after everything has been glued together will refine the length to 600 :)

Tools for the job. PVA glue, biscuits. annnd a... Biscuit cutter? (who cares about its real name biscuit cutter sounds cool)

As you can see, there is some light inbetween the boards, so a nice plane on areas will help close those gaps up

Some fellow putting the biscuits into their grooves after a nice layers of PVA Glue.

All clamped up, with some weights on the timber to stop it from setting wonky :)

This here is ONE side to the draw unit
will get the next one done on Sunday, after I let this one set over a day or so!
