Virgin Media Make UK History

mates on the 10mb package, its the slowest crap i've ever seen. Not sure if its a one off but when i had a 2mb connection it was waaaay quicker. Hopefully these have been sorted out now.

Would be nice if it was that simple!

Hi :)

I do not understand Virgin and I have been with them since they took over Telewest. They are now willing to offer higher rated service but can not sustain the service they have.

I have always paid for an unlimited service with Telewest/Virgin and recently phoned there technical support to find out why my 10mb line was running at 2mb. I found out that Virgin will allow me 4gb of data a day at 10mb then will cut my connection to a 1/5 of its rated speed for the rest of the 24 hours :S

When I argued that I paid for an unlimited connection I got given the URL for their fair usuage policy and told that my connection was still unlimited as they were not going to cap the amount I download just the speed at which I can do it.

I also enquired if this was going to be the same with the 50mb service to which I was told that the 50mb service was at present not being traffic managed!!

Its about time the goverment sorted these companys out, if it was any other industry then the office of fair trading would be up in arms!!

looks good but as the above poster as already said I got capped the other day and im on the 20mb service, then again when its not capped I always get 20mb so shouldnt complain too much...

i don't really have any problems with the STM.

if i need to, i just try to make sure i do most of my downloading after 9pm and always get around 2.3MB/sec

i'm on the 20M package, thinking about upgrading to the 50M without phone

I'm on the 50mb service for 5 months now and I can confirm that it's not capped..

But then again, it's not really 50mb either.. :(

nah you'll have you 50 Mb un capped till the next upgrade and then you'll get capped and the larger service will be uncapped ...

just a way to make more money.

If any one watched the gadget show tonight in china they had 1 Gig connection for less than £10 a month. there slowest connection is 100Mbs at £2.50 a month ...ALL UNCAPPED

Come to the UK you pay £25 for some **** speed and get capped ...

Yeh, we really do get left in the dirt (penniless, I might add) in terms of broadband. Especially when compared to the likes of Japan.

IIRC, Ofcom has actually decided to launch an investigation in to FUPs and the like, as well as no being able to sustain consistent speeds for their customers etc. How long this will take before we see some actual action out of it though, who knows.

I am looking at the 50Mb line for my house next year (sharing with 3 other people), and have been wondering if it is capped. So it is definitely not capped then? So we can all go mad with downloads and streaming and not be throttled?

Other than that, price drops are always a good thing.

When I was on Virgin it was incredible slow and even sometimes didn't work at all.

And you have to pay 25p/min (even if your a customer) to call a someone who hardly speaks english to explain the problem!!!

I'm happy with my Sky (Even more after being upgraded from Max (16mb) to Unlimited (20mb) for free :D

they made the helpline free again after so many complaints from customers

one way to get uk tech help is to phone retentions and explain you're thinking about leaving because you can't get your technical problem sorted out :p

if you're lucky you might get passed to someone who does more than just read from a script

the best way is through the virginmedia newsgroups

nah if you have real problems with virvgin media cable modem then fire a email to this guy ->

Neil.Berkett (at) virginmedia (dot) co (dot) uk

I can guarantee with 12 hours you get a email back and wont belong beofre you problem is fixed.

Btw that the head of Virgin media (cable) :) ....

hehe.. I work with virgin quite a lot, being in the ISP game, and I can tell you they are quite useless, but they are better than openreach.

I would move over to cable, but the speeds they offer where i am match my BeThere line so its not worth it for me.

Chetnet

Is the place to go for UK broadband info/issues and a load of good guides. Lots of inside people, lots of news and a decent bunch.

Been around as far back as I can remember.

I'm on the 20mb service and it's capped, but only if I download more than 6GB a day, which is a ridiculous amount really. I've only managed this once when downloading some OS's (legally)

He deals with national too, if anyone on virgin ADSL has an issue dont bother mailing him, because often it will end up getting sent to me to sort and I dont take kindly to people queue jumping lol.

Virgin has never understood the meaning of taking it steady, they will go full steam ahead with any new products regardless of the state current ones are in, and when the new product starts to show problems, they will keep going and just leave me and colleagues to scramble to get it fixed with no information or help whatsoever

Virgin National has just released a WLR service that I spend 6 weeks testing. Meaning people with a standard landline can take line rental with virgin for £11pm and speeds (location & line providing) up to 24mbps on the C&W LLU service. Prices are ok too, providing youve already got a working line in place. However, if anyone decides to go for this, make sure you ring first thing in the morning ... wont say why lol

lol it was me whom sent that guy i gave the address out a email about being lyed to buy virgin . Didn't just straight to the top for no reason but after 1 years o no access to my real email address of my web space (witch was locked) i started to lose my temper a bit and then after being lied to about a cable modem problem. I ended up hunting his email address down. With in 24 hours every thing was sorted.

This was the original mail i sent to him you may find it funny.

To start off nice and simple i pay the old £25 for a 10mb connection and for the last few weeks have only been getting 2mb even after 12 at night. thinking at first i must have hit there cut off limit. But over the last few days i noticed my kids haven't used there PCs and ive had hardly any downloads or uploads for that matter going on. So after phoning there normal help desk i was put through to India broadband technical support.

Now after the nice fellow introduced himself as Steve (ill let that one go) and asked from my name "Mick". He went on to read his m****cript of how i must unplug the cable modem and re set it which i didn't complain about and just did it to keep him happy. I then re ran a test and saw i was still only connected at 2mb. Then he gladly kept reading from his screen that i must remove all my Cookies (cool this is getting interesting) and make sure my virus protector is turned off (now hes relay going some ware here) so i obliged him anyway. Then he told me to re test my line and he would check it from his end. Again still connected at 2mb lol.

Again after he came back after waffling a loading of Hindu speech to his mentor whom was sitting right next to him and then his mentor calling him Rujal (not steve) and me listening and him not knowing i understand a little Hindu my self he said "please turn off your cable modem else it may (now these are his words not mine) BLOW UP ..........."

what !!!!! he can blow up my modem all the way from India ... HOLY COW .... How can he do that .... Rujal ops i mean Steve can actually some how send a bomb down my line and blow up my cable modem or even send down more than the few volts than the line can carry and take out my modem and no one else in the street. How can he do such a thing. I started to sweat at this point and started to feel afraid that some how i have a time bob sitting in my living room waiting for some Guy in India (or is he supposed to be in the UK i never know) has a big red nob that he can hit at any time and blow up my home !!!!!!! I had to calm down and ask my lass to make me a coffee before i pee my pans with fear.

I turned round to Rujal on the phone and said "Steve were are you mate because im now worried that if i touch this bomb it might go off in my hands" he came back with im from Newport". I said "is'nt that near Newcastle ?" of which he replied with "yes its close"...... I then asked my lass to check my sleeping tablets to see if i may have taken to many .. you never know it could be just me. I then said to Rujal "Steve no offense mate but you have me very worried now that if i turn of this cable modem off it might blow up on me like you said" . He then calmed me down by explaining this could only happen if i leave it on while he runs some test's. So that calmed me down a lot now and here is me thinking that he could blow it up while i was turning it off.

So i unplugged the cable modem and told Rajal or was it Steve who resides in Newport that is near Newcastle that i had done what he had asked off me and that was to remove the fragile volatile cable modem from its power unit as he asked .....

He then told me to wait while he sends some commands to the modem and see's if he could solve this massive problem that i was having.

After about 4 min Rujal ops i mean Steve who lives in Newport near Newcastle who has the ability to blow up my cable modem in my house then came back and said "Miss Rungien" (i quickly check my genitals just in case this guy can now do gender exchange via some sort of mental telepathy or even over my cable modem line) can you please turn on back your modem (no that 's how he said it this nice UK citizen from Newport near Newcastle called Steve.....)

So i worryingly go over to my modem double checking that my genitals are still there and that my "Moob's" haven't suddenly grown into fully fledged boobs and plug back in the power supply all the while feeling a little unconformable about this simple problem.

I then tell Rujal dam done it again i mean Steve from Newport near Newcastle that has the ability to blow up my cable modem and give me a gender reassignment while all this is going on that i had done as he asked ... He then asked me miss Rugien to check my PC to see if it was now working.

I did this and holly cow its now working i have my 10Mbs back.

So i then turned round to Rujal ......dam done it again ..... i mean Steve on the phone "Thank you for sending my 10Mb Cm file and flashing my firmware on my new cable modem to what it was supposed to be, but do me a favor next time don't lie down the telephone Rujal it doesn't make your mentor who is listening in on the other end of the phone look Good and have a nice day over there in India bud" ......

This is the sort of lies you Indian staff say to us users over the phone. I am not impressed really as i have to deal with types of **** ups when peoples modems don't work as a IT engineer. This was my own cable modem this time. Im considering from now on telling my customers to not bother with virgin media as a ISP because of the out right lies your staff tell and the really bad service that you are giving us over here in the UK.

ever since NTL got taken over by virgin the service has gone down hill. it took your company 9 months just to give me back my email account and they still haven't given me back access to my FTP account witch has now been over 1.5 years.

Ill be posting this in all the forums i can because im fed up with your company and they way ive been treated and lied to even though it was funny.

Like i say 24 hrs after he receved that

1) mail account was sorted

2) web account was sorted

ever since then i had no problems what so ever.

The capped uncapped debate is exactly why when we bought our broadband we recorded the phone call with 5 different reps who all confirmed there was NO usage limit :D

I get spot on 20Mb, happy as can be which is why I always recommend Virgin Media.

Very fast and very good.

I wish I could get 50Mb but can't afford that.

200Mb *DROOOOOOOL!* sounds awesome, can't wait until I can get my hands on that lol!

It's funny.

I paid for the most expensive NTL connection, back in the day when broadband came out, with the lovely fiber lines.

Ever since its seems that they've bumped those who are on that top expense to the faster packages they come out with, automagically.

Hear rumors about Virgin not auto-bumping the top payers the next time around tho ????!
