hey all, im a gamer, that has just joined the PC market and i currently use skype to talk to friends while in game, so i need a headset for me o use so my friend cant hear himself. is there any good value for money options out there, its just basic to start off, as i will upgrade later, and i will be using onboard sound. can you give examples of the best for under 50 pounds and the best option for under 100 pounds, i am currently looking at the legitech G35.

the headset does need to have a mic, its for first person shoot games (eg. bf3, or counter strike) but also for music, im not looking for anything great at the moment, but i would like something thats not to bad for a start, but cheap, id like to keep it under 50, but i may go higher.
thanks for any help.

If it's for music too, then you're better off going with proper headphones and a clip on microphone.

Get a pair of these:

With this:

They'll perform a lot better in music than any headset under £100 - and that'll cost you £30 in total.

If you do want an actual headset, the Corsair 1300s/1500s aren't a bad choice - but the Sennheisers will be a lot better for listening to music.

When you get more money in the future, consider getting a soundcard too.

I would listen to Jamesriley on this matter. He tends to be one of the go to guys here for headset suggestions. To be completely honest I wish i'd gone for a clip on mic and dedicated headphone set up (not that i'm unhappy with my steelseries siberia V2)

If you're looking for something a lil better maybe James can recommend an even better set of headphones to partner with the mic and spend a bit more of your budget

If you're spending much more than £30 or so on headphones, then you're getting into territories of needing a soundcard of some sort to really appreciate the differences between them.

The Sennheiser 202s are actually really good for the money. Anything up to about £50 I think I'd still probably say go with them and save your money.

Forgot to say this in my first post btw - but you can't game whilst using chat on skype. Skype has the microphone as always on, so you'll always hear any background static, even if the person isn't talking. You need to use a medium where there's a minimum level for sending (most games have some form of built in comms that do this). That way, the microphone only picks up the noise when it goes above a certain volume (such as speaking) and you don't get background noise from the mic all the time.

I would highly recommend teamspeak over skype, it's the no1 choice for clans and gaming communities but also for friend groups aswell as it eliminates all the problems mentioned by james. You can either easily make your own server or alternatively join a community one like the one here at OC3D.
