uTorrent silently installing bundled Bitcoin mining software

You're implying that bit was directed at you. It was more of a generalized statement. Considering you immediately linked it with piracy (you might as well do that to streaming these days...) earlier I can see why you took it personally.

I don't need to torrent to get my music either but I used that guy as an example as he is pretty big. Torrenting will become a bit more popular due to the various data laws that are springing up and not to mention the whole US/UK governments being a bit backwards when it comes to file hosting/sharing.

I didn't link it with piracy if you read it. I said i could go to HDtracks(for buying hi-fi music) or go to a streaming service like Tidal. Tidal is a paid streaming service. Nothing about it is piracy, money they make also goes towards the artists/owner. So in the end i as said earlier, your music example applies too select circumstances and other alternatives are out there they are 100% legal.

Well again that guy is a select circumstance. Sure to those that listen to him then by all means torrent it to get his music, doesn't bother me much. I'm not against torrenting. If it becomes the new way of doing things companies do to save money and avoid lawsuits and etc, then i won't be against it. Just still must be wary, hackers will jump on ship too to infect torrenting clients. We'll see how it goes i suppose

Sorry but this is not only old news but it miss's vital information as basically is scaremongering.

They have already posted on the utorrent and EpicScale sites that is was a bug/error and anyone effected can claim a $20 Amazon card and help fixing the issue.

Try adding the proper info to the topic if this post was created to help the forums users rather than scare the crap out of them.

I'm an avid lurker but I'm Disappointed in this thread tbh so had to post.

Ehhh its not like the installer of utorrent suddenly bugged in a crypto miner, that thing is placed there and i dont believe in the whole 20 amazon card thing either.

You talk about adding proper info, well go ahead where is your source material, id like to see utorrent defend itself, and probably fail, could be amusing.

I love how you uninstall EpicScale.

-edit- to be clear quite a few people who had it reported they have to uninstall it this way as it doesn't uninstall properly.

If you contact Epicscale support via email they will ask for proof and 'additional details' to confirm you have been affected before offering the $20 amazon card

Also if you just google "epicscale utorrent $20 Amazon" you will get many sites reporting just that.

I'm not against this article warning people at all, im against it not being anything more than a scare tactic and offers no help to end users who may have been effected :P

Not here to argue btw its just my opinion is all

Ok fair enough, im still againt utorrent now anyway, it used to be lightweight and just simple and it isnt anymore so meh.

No worries dude, your back that's all that matters, hope your settled in your new home.

Settled and skint! :) Loving it though, it's like being on holiday all the time. Such a nice area and house. And the job is leagues better, much happier bunny now.

And the bottom line is...

1- This thread is NOT about torrent legitimacy. What your opinions is on that matter is IRRELEVANT to this thread. Nobody gives a fuck about your personal views on that subject in the context of this thread.

2- Not all torrent clients are created equal. There are some torrent distribution that will simply overwhelm and crash poorly coded torrent client. Torrent distribution such as video game digital preservation like MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) with 10 000 files or far worse, MAME extra files (snapshot, icons, samples etc...) that is comprised of well over 80 000 (yeah, that's eighty THOUSANDS) files. uTorrent handle those with ease.

3- Yes, bitcoin mining, even if opt-in, is a very bad idea uTorrent should let go.

4- Yes, uTorrent is not what it used to be as far as bloat is concerned, BUT you can easily streamline uTorrent by removing ALL advertising:

Go to: Options -> Preferences -> Advanced

- Filter: type: "upsell"
- change "gui.show_plus_upsell" to false

- Filter: type: "offers"
- change "offers.featured_content_badge_enabled" to false
- change "offers.featured_content_notifications_enabled" to false
- change "offers.featured_content_rss_enabled" to false
- change "offers.left_rail_offer_enabled" to false
- change "offers.sponsored_torrent_offer_enabled" to false

- Filter: type: "update"
- change "silent_auto_updates_autorestart" to false
Press: Apply and OK

Press and hold: Shift+F2 and go to: Options -> Preferences (while still holding Shift+F2)
note: hidden Advanced settings

Choose: Advanced
- Filter: type: "upsell"
- change "gui.show_plus_upsell_nodes" to false
Press: Apply and OK

I currently use uTorrent 3.4.2 build 34672. No bitcoin issue. No ad or bloat after removing them in the advance option. It's stable with very low CPU usage. I plan on sticking with this specific version for a long, long time. If you want to avoid update nightmare, do not forget to uncheck: "Automatically install updates" in preferences -> general

Happy torrenting. :)
