uTorrent silently installing bundled Bitcoin mining software

First of all, uTorrent does not silently install EpicScale. One of the steps in the installation wizard asks you if you "Accept the offer" to install EpicScale. You can safely "Decline the offer" and the installer will complete successfully, intalling only uTorrent and not EpicScale. But since 90% of the users never read what the installer asks and keep hitting "Next" until they see "Finish", they end up with a lot of crapware on their machines. I for one, have the latest version of uTorrent, I've had every previous version installed, updated from those and I don't have and never had EpicScale installed. That's because I'm careful about what I accept from each and every installer. I'm not saying that what uTorrent has done is right but if you realize that with free software always comes bloatware/malware/crapware and you're careful about what you "Accept", you should be fine.
Cheers!

That part about free software coming with junk only applies to popular stuff and crappy developers taking shit deals to fill up their installers, simple fact is that utorrent has been getting worse and worse over the last few years and this is just the icing on the cake that really shouldnt be defended by anyone, no matter how carefull you are with it's installation.

If someone like you that finds himself being carefull still accepts installers which do offer these crap addons then i think you have your priorities wrong, because i would never finish the installation after seeing what is being offered, id look up a older version or another cleaner alternative because once programs start offering these kinds of installers it usually means their software is getting worse or that they need an injection of money to keep things updated.

However that is just my opinion, and isnt personal to you in any way.

It's a real shame about Utorrent it has been getting worse and alot of that seems to have happened once Sourceforge got involved,so as others here have suggested i've now swapped to Deluge

utorrent is a horrible program, massive adware overload! Frostwire is a much cleaner program, and there is nothing illegal about torrents so long as your using it for legitimate reasons and not the obvious dodgy naughty stuff.

You do realize that Torrenting is also a great way to get legitimate stuff, such as linux distributions and music that has been released specifically to be torrented?

can still download it without torrents? Took me two seconds to google Linux Mint 17.1 and bam i could have downloaded it.. No sense in using a torrent for that? I buy my music even if i could torrent it despite if it was meant to or not

Because big files are usually faster to download via a torrent rather than a (usually slow) single download server

Torrenting/p2p makes it cheaper for companies/organisations as they don't have to pay hosting costs. Blizzard have done it for ages (It uses the bittorent protocol to distribute updates) and it'll become more popular over time. Heck there are even torrents that you pay for now as well. Thom Yorke's latest album is only available through a paid torrent.

Its alot quicker to get certain distributions of linux/some of the less wellknown distributions via torrent. Infact quite a few of them would prefer that you torrent it as it would mean they didn't need to fund raise for hosting costs.

Torrenting does not just mean piracy. Sure its linked quite heavily to Piracy these days but its pretty ignorant to just flatly associate the two. Heck there are whole legal only torrent sites.

I was at a game mod forum and a guy had made a map pack we used a torrent to p2p the files in the map pack to anyone interested

Don't think calling me ignorant is needed at all and assuming you know how i think about torrents is ignorant in itself, no need to jump to conclusions and start insulting others . I know what torrenting is and how it works. I do not need an explanation. I would never pirate anything and nor have i ever tried. I never said torrenting is bad. I merely said i would rather just download it without the use of a client. I don't care if it takes longer, i'm not in a hurry and would rather not use a client as simply no need to. If i had no choice at all and 100% had to have it that is different and it would probably be for a specific purpose(like work).

With your example of torrenting music; some are only available through clients or even paid only. Well none of the music i listen to is on a legal torrent and i can easily just go buy the cd. If i wanted to get it digitally i could go to HDtracks or something similar like Tidal(streaming/paid subscription though) to get it. I've never encountered a band where i needed a client to get there music. So your example isn't always a definite point to make. It comes down to special circumstance.

You're implying that bit was directed at you. It was more of a generalized statement. Considering you immediately linked it with piracy (you might as well do that to streaming these days...) earlier I can see why you took it personally.

I don't need to torrent to get my music either but I used that guy as an example as he is pretty big. Torrenting will become a bit more popular due to the various data laws that are springing up and not to mention the whole US/UK governments being a bit backwards when it comes to file hosting/sharing.

If it's in the Opt-Out at install time, I couldn't care less what kind of crap it tries to install, as long as I can insure it doesn't install.

It's funny, uTorrent is the only torrent client I've hard work for me persistently. I've had issues with every other torrent client I've tried. I used to like Deluge, but the Windows version had this issue that it would randomly stop downloading very large torrents after about 90%, the Linux version worked fine for me though.
