Upgrading from 6850

670 if you can afford it but from what i can find the 7950 is about 240 quid and a 670 is around 300 quid (not sure on prices in dollars sorry). if you can afford a 670 then go for that but a 7950 will still max nearly anything you throw at it.
 
I can afford it. The EVGA one is looking nice. 359.99 USD after rebate. According to the specs it only needs 500watt psu with 30A on the rail. I have a max of 38A on my rails.
 
i've never heard of your psu brand before so if you want to risk it feel free but i would get a new psu and monitor before i though about dropping that kind of money on a new gpu
 
The PSU was on sale at microcenter. According to my calc the max the 670 will draw just about hits the 80% usage mark of my 12v rails. No room for OCing...

I'm going to read up on my current monitor and see if it is worth getting a 670 first.
 
It may say its 650w but some cheaper psu's won't be able to supply that power well and could f up your system big time if it goes wrong. Just get a higher quality psu such as a corsair, be quiet or silverstone. should last you a fair few upgrades and be rock solid.

As for the monitor, its not as bad as 720p but i would still get a 1080p monitor first :)

I don't understand why 1080 on a sub 48" monitor is important. We have a 50" led lcd HDTV and we can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080. Now on our 73" mitsubishi tv 720 vs 1080 is night and day.
 
AnandTech has the GTX 660 2GB right behind the 7950 and is 100 USD less. At my monitor's res the GTX 660 plays metro 2033 maxed at 45fps. The 660 is roughly 50% to 75% faster than my 6850 on average to. Roughly same power draw as my card as well.

Are you actually being serious? There is a massive difference between 720 and 1080, I was playing in a 19" 720 monitor I now play on a 22" 1080 monitor and I can safely say it is the best upgrade I have made so far, And tbh if you have $1500 to spend on a 73" tv I'm sure you can find $150 to get a 22" 1080p screen
 
Justifying a new gpu and monitor to the wife is the problem. She thinks buying new games for the xbox 360 kinect is the way to go lol.

For the difference in 720 vs 1080 maybe I don't see it because I wear glasses and have astigmatism in both?

What triggered my need for an upgrade is I can't max out XCOM: Enemy Unknown in 1680x1050 with my 6850.
 
Went to microcenter and bought an ASUS 7870, and a new OCZ 700W power supply with 72A on 12v rails. 4 18A rails so I may need to get a 2 pci-e to 1 pci-e adapter. May take PSU back.
 
a lot of people on this forum have had bad experiences with ocz power supplies and ocz products in general, myself included in. if you can trade it in you might want to consider that option
 
If each rail has 18A but gpu only has two power inputs will rail 1 and 2 pull the extra amperage from rail 3 and 4?

I got this OCZ because it was on clearance but I didn't think about the amperage being divided by 4 rails. I'm not installing it or the 7870 until I figure it out.

The average lifespan of this PSU is a little past it's warranty which is over 2 years. I'm sure I'll be upgrading it before then.

From past experience PSU failures come with people pushing them past the 80% usage mark for extended times. I ran a x1950 pro, E4300 cpu on a 350w gateway psu for over 2 years than ran another card (can't remember which but was a big upgrade from the x1950 pro) for over another year. I don't think this psu will see anything past 70% usage.
