Upgrading. Am i doing something wrong?

Im going to be upgrading from my Amd 955 to a Amd 8320 also going to be getting a 7970. My motherboard is a Asus M5A88-V EVO. Am i doing something wrong with this i need your opinion.

That will all be compatible mate, should run nicely. If you can get a R9 280x for the same price as a 7970 then I'd do that as the 280x is on par with the 7970 GHz edition.

I would upgrade the motherboard.. pretty old and not exactly an overclocker which the FX chips are good at. Also only supports 1333mhz ram and not 1600mhz without overclocking.

Yep, you'll be fine since the CPU is on the official support list :)

I'd say get all the toys you stated, then do a motherboard upgrade after, since that'll be where you gain the least performance so it makes sense to do it last :)

+1 for 280x > 7970.

Or i have another option i can follow i can switch to the intel 4670K with a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H and buy a corsair h100i to cool it. I would use my current h80 but i lost the brackets for intel

Don't double post, use the edit button. That 4670K with a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H and corsair h100i sounds good but what GPU do you currently have?

I have a 7870 Xt im happy with it but in bf4 i get like 40 fps but i guess that is cuase of the beta.

I wouldn't say that a GPU upgrade is the most important thing here. Also going from a 7870 Xt to a 7970 in my opinion isn't a sufficient upgrade if the games you play don't use more than 2GB. As for BF4 beta right now, nearly everyone isn't getting the best FPS, it's not all down to the GPU.

What FPS do you get in BF3? I have a 7950 and average 55FPS.

for battlefield 4 remember performance should be better optimised in the final release, both in the game front and driver front.

When the mantle update is released for BF4 it will drastically improve performance on amds GCN cards.

Also remember you could crossfire your 7870 XT (get roughly 780 performance), please note your second pci-e lane on that motherboard is x4 (not optimal for crossfire), i would reccomend a change of motherboard if you want to crossfire them.

if you are going to upgrade both the motherboard and cpu i would definately go intel over amd.

+1 for the 4670k upgrade, AMD CPUs and BF4 seem to not be the best friends (my FX-4100 got an avg framerate of 10) and the 7870XT should do you fine for the game.

dunno about anyone else but my fx8350 runs it fine

I guess i should take the intel route but what about the power supply i keep hearing that they have to be haswell certified or something.

Probably because of the 8 cores and the newer generation

I've got an ax 750 which is definitely pre haswell and therefore not haswell certified and i got no problems. I think that stuff is only related to their new power saving technology.

ok thanks

the fx 8350 is a good option to consider, with more and more upcoming titles being able to support all its 8 cores making its full potential usable.

that being said intel still have the higher ipc, lower power consumption, higher frequency ram utilisation etc. definately the better cpus atm.
