Upgrading. Am i doing something wrong?

the fx 8350 is a good option to consider, with more and more upcoming titles being able to support all its 8 cores making its full potential usable.

that being said intel still have the higher ipc, lower power consumption, higher frequency ram utilisation etc. definately the better cpus atm.

What do you think i should do what would you do?

You can get a 4670k+mobo+ new gpu+h100i...
I see no reason why you can't get a 8320 and keep the mobo plus get a higher end gpu and possibly a h100i.

More games are starting to utilize more cores. With consoles using x86 and amd architecture, it's fairly obvious they made it to benefit from being ported easily with another AMD CPU/APU.
So therefore those extra cores on the 8320 will help a lot. Only other CPU that will be on par or surpass it is 4770k, or any intel 6 core cpu.

i think that depends on what he is interested in. currently games like PS2 run like hell on the 8320 and i don't see a full utilization happening before 2015. The 8320 is a bet, the 4670k is a sure thing.

i think there are a 2 paths you can choose;

1. keep your current motherboard, upgrade to a 8320 or 8350, sell your 7870 and upgrade to a higher end gpu. keep your h80 as its a great cooler.

Adv. good all round upgrade

2. sell your cpu and motherboard and buy a decent 1150 motherboard and 4670k, keep your 7870 for now and upgrade later. either buy a new cooler or try to buy a intel bracket for your h80.

Adv. 4670k is a better cpu than a 8350, new motherboard could offer good crossfire support later

intel will be a more costly upgrade due to the change of motherboard, more expensive cpu and likely need for a new cpu cooler.
amd will free up your funds for a gpu upgrade as you cpu cooler and motherboard can be reused.

Is your rig primarily for gaming? do you do any work on your pc, modelling rendering etc?

Sometimes i do stuff like rendering for school projects and stuff but primarily gaming. i also found a h80i bracket on corsair website for 10 dollars so its about 430 dollars to go with intel. If i go with amd i can only buy the 8320 or 8350 and have about 270 dollars left

if it were my money then i'd probably buy the fx 8350 and use some of the spare money to upgrade other components in my rig, ssd (if you don't already have one) maybe upgrade your gpu or buy more ram (depending how much you have already).

ultimately your choice though.
