Upgrading advice (Titans)

I'm looking to upgrade to a pair of titans from my current cards which are a pair of Gigabyte GTX 580 SOC editions. I've had nothing but trouble since from these cards with abnormal temps and fans stopping and then working with a mind of their own. :headscratch: for the last 6 months or so I've had to run them at stock 580 clock and volts just to keep the temps calm.

Anyway angry ramble over my rig is currently stands as

CoolerMaster HAF-x
Intel i7 2700k @ 4.6 Ghz
Asus Maximus iV Extreme-Z
Kingston HyperX blue 16GB
Gigabyte GTX 580 SOC x2
WD Caviar black 1TB
Corsair AX1200 power supply

I'm asking advice as I wouldn't want to get 2 titans to then find out I'd have a bottleneck and waste the awesome power of the titans. :lol:
I am using a 27" iiyama 1080p monitor with an old dell as an off monitor but I am looking to maybe upgrade to something higher res in the future.

PS I have read about others with these Gigabyte cards having trouble getting them RMA'd just because of fan issues. I have put off even bothering to try because of this but I'm wondering if it might be worth trying to get at least one of them RMA'd because then I can at least sell 1 or maybe both a to a friend or something.

In the pic you can see the fan in question on the top card but also the fan on the far left also makes a slow dying fan sound.

a single titan would be fine for single display, are you running 1080p or 1440p
but yeah id wait for the 780, do you have to SLI?
Just read you run at 1080p so id buy one titan (or 780) and a better monitor that runs at 1440 if your desperate to spend money
 
I've read the recent articles on the 780 and it doesn't look like it's gonna be as fast as the titan spec wise. At least the titans would last a long time and would be ready for a new higher res monitor/multi monitor setup in the future.
 
I only have a 1080p monitor atm but that will change soon enough. I want to future proof for future games as well as enjoy the new metro as well as a few others. seeing as these 580s are spazzing out I'd like to replace then now then get the monitors other than the way around.
 
There is NO WAY you will need 2 Titans. Even not on 5760x1080 resolution. I would wait for the new series of video cards to come out, and get 1 or 2 780.
 
thats what ive been trying to say ... most of what he seems to be doing will be wasted but he can spent his money if he likes :)

Calm down lads. If he wants to spend the money, then let him. No need to get i-rate about it.

Yes 2 titans is a bit much, no the 700's probably won't be 'as powerful' but they will be 'ALOT cheaper'.

If you have the cash, and you sound like you do, and that's what you want mate. You go for it. Don't let this lot put you off. we can only advise you.

If you have the money, go for it.
I'd personally indeed wait for the 780s, but if you feel the need, get them titans.
You won't be lacking performance :)
 
I understand that it is a bit extreme as of now and yes I do know that the price is eye watering and that the 780s will be cheaper but titans do everything I want. They're quiet and have more than enough power for now and later which is what I am after in the end. I don't want to be upgrading every 3 seconds just for a 20% upgrade.

I do hope that people realise that this isn't just someone getting the biggest most expensive cards for the sake of it. I do not have the intention of buying these for so called "E peen". I remember People being same about 580s way back when and hey the people that still got em now (not me 'cause mine are dying) are still kicking ass and happy with em.
 
fair enough, just hope you up your displays, other wise any upgrade in card is wasted

I think on a single display you would likely be CPU bound but the FPS in every game released right now would be way higher than your display is capable of outputting. We are talking 120+ FPS on even the most demanding titles like Crysis 3.

Now if you intend to go Multi-Display, think 1920x1200 x 3 (5760x1200) then I don't think your CPU will actually hurt performance that much.

The 2600K really isn't no slouch. An Ivy Bridge based processor is going to be faster obviously but I don't actually think you'd notice the difference outside of a benchmark. The fact is the Titans are very fast, your CPU can satisfy them and if you're going Multi-Monitor most of the demand will be on the cards to deliver more so than your CPU.

Now having said all that, I would not recommend going with Titans. I understand it is your money and you can spend it on whatever you want but what I'd recommend you to do instead is to purchase 3x24" (1920x1200) or 3x27" (2560x1440) and then get either the forthcoming GTX 780's or the new ATi HD 8970 (If that ends up being its name). All of these cards will be cheaper than the Titans and provide you with more than the capability you would need to play all the latest games maxed out at a significantly lower price point, we are talking savings you could use towards a triple display setup that would make Titan worthwhile in the first place.
 
To put it simply OP, the TITAN is by far the worst price for performance seen in a long time. 2 680 will easily out do a TITAN. The only reason to get a Titan is if 6gb of Vram is absolutely crucial. And if you do gaming, it is not. I would just wait for the 780s. Yes they are TAD slower but not only offer a WAY better price for performance but will still offer 3gb of vRAM and will most likely cost around the $500 mark. And I am guessing 2 780s will be significantly faster than one TITAN for the same price if not a tad more.

I have 2 x 3GB EVGA HC2 580's N i Love em :)

and i'll probably look to the titan or an equivelent next. not interested in the 'clocked down' versions :)

Do whatever you want mate, it's your money in the end.

I bet that looks gorgeous up close. I game at 2560x1600 or 7680x1600 (Surround) and it's nice but the pixel density is nothing like these 4K displays.
