you might be better off going down the AMD route with such a small budget, you would get better bang4buck

cooler wise noctua DH14

Naaa thats wrong, an intel i7 930/950 is better as with the HT that means 8 threads

Id look at the i7 930/950 the Gigabyte UD3R V2 or the Asus P6X58D-E, 6gb of Mushkin 998826 memory and a Noctua NH-D14 cooler fella, that my friend would be a corker of a little rig

TBH a hex core AMD can only match an i7 when the AMD is overclocked, and when the i7 is overclocked (and will probably go further), the tables go intel again.

so an overclocked hex at 4ghz wont trounce on a i7 overclocked in most cases dont you need to turn HT off to get them stable r has that changed since the 930

and would it justify the extra cost

Nope 4ghz with HT on isnt really hard with the right cooling. And for video editing and stuff like that the i7 will win out

All of us folding with i7's leave HT enabled. I can fold/bench at 4.2GHz with HT without issue (other than crappy summer temps with this H50). I'm hoping to go watercooled this winter so I can actually push this system.

The 870 and 950 are on two different platforms. The i7 870 is on the 1156 socket whereas the 950 is 1366. If you want to use that P55 motherboard you will have to go with the 870 as the 950 isn't compatible.

lol via amazon (germany) the 870 costs 265€ and the 950 270€ ^^ and i want a mainboard which supports usb 3.0

edit: yeah the plattforms... whats better about 1366 ?

1366 supports triple channel memory, 1156 supports dual channel. IIRC 1366 also has more PCIe lanes.

Triple channel gives you more memory bandwidth. Helps in the benchmark scores, that's about it. More PCIe lanes is only beneficial for SLI or Crossfire.

The extra lanes of PCIe mean better performance for SLI/Crossfire, and also mean expansion cards (like real RAID cards, USB3 cards etc.) won't eat up your main card's bandwidth. Generally X58 boards have better power phases and will clock better although up to 4GHz that's probably moot.

mhh.. is it easy to overclock a cpu (never done it before)? im thinking about the msi p55 gd85 (which has a nice automatic oveclock) and the 870 or asus p6x58d-e and the 950 which cost the same.. which wlan card N would you suggest and which RAM (about 120€)

The i7/i5 platform is daunting at first. Once you get a grip on what everything does it all seems simple.

Most people around here recommend either Mushkin or Corsair Dominators for memory. I like G.Skill memory as well.

120 for the ram and wireless card or 120 for the ram

anything by buffalo, netgear or belkin are good

and dominator GT's are awsome

im going to buy the i7 950 with Asus P6X58D-E and kingston HyperX T1 KHX2250C9D3T1K2/4GX which are very good rated in on this site, and a Noctua NH-D14.

anything bad about this? dont want to buy crap
