New build advice needed

Hello

I have an old system (i7 870 with a gtx780 and 8gigs of ddr3 ram).

I waited so long because it plays what I play. Now recently with archeage that allows multibox and star citizen that is alpha and very very heavy... I decided that I need an upgrade.

I would love a RYZEN 1700x or 1800x cpu, that would be a last minute decision with my vendor because we are friends and he allows me to buy with installments hehehe. Mostly because of its price at the moment, both cost very high and we wait for the prices to settle down a bit. It started with 600euro day one now 1800x is at 570. I hope it drops down to 530 or near that. 8 cores and 16 threads will be enough for multibox and stuff. My current built cannot hold more than 2 windows, 3 = huge lag and freaks out.

I also wait for revision 2, question : how much it may take for rev2 in cpus and mobos?

I also consider for 16 or 32gigs of ram, but I ve read that ryzen is dual channel, meaning I have to buy 2 pairs of 2x8gigs if I want 32gigs of ram? How that works.

I am also interested for a case, but my vendor here is limited from 2 distributors, I will give you a link page, dont read the greek stuff, just scroll the cases and I would love a recommendation for a case up to 100 Euros.

I already have an ssd 128 gigs, I am also a university student so I have free windows and stuff. In addition i also have a blank 2tb by western digital green and a brand new corsair platinum AX850w modular psu. I am thinking of using my gtx780 for now..

So I am going for a cpu/mobo/ram/case/maybe a couple of peripherals such as a new corsair mouse and joystick. Do I need an extra ssd for games?

thanks in advance. :D

here is the link for cases https://www.you.gr/pc-parts/exartimata-desktop-pc-anavathmisis/koutia
Or I can buy from my country a cheap phanteks case such as Phanteks eclipse 400, Phanteks ENTHoo pro M and Phanteks enthoo pro.

I dont know if I can order a case from abroad..eg. Uk market.
Tom Logan said in a youtube video for a guide about ryzen and what to get for ultimate performance.. where is it? MSI mobos are good for ryzen? I am thinking of one called titanium or something, it looks cool.

If you want Ryzen, get the 1700. It's by far the best price/performance CPU.
For motherboards, well, tbh it's up to you. Not all of them have been reviewed yet.

You don't need more than16GB of ram. If you want more, then sure go for it, but if you are just gaming, 16GB is enough.
As for the dual channel, it really just means you need at least 2 DIMMs for Dual channel to be enabled and get the best performance. If you want more than 2 sticks, simple, just add another 2.

For cases, personally out of all the options, the Entho Pro M gets my vote.

Storage: Use the SSD for the OS and all your software for school.
Use everything else on the 2TB WD Green drive. If you want SSD for gaming, then buy another one and tbh at least 480GB and up. Games are getting very large nowadays. If you only have a handful of games, a 250GB should do it unless you can fit it all on the 128GB ssd you already have.

Yup, really, don't waste your money on the X CPUs. The 1700 will clock almost as high as (if not as high as) the other two but costs considerably less. I would pass the saving into the case and get a good one.

Same with the 16gb ram (as NBD says). Get 16gb now, as it's at a stupid price, then wait and see if it comes down in price and get some more then if you need it. 16gb is more than enough for gaming.

Thank you both, my question about the ram is mostly for the type of ram I must get.

There is 4 sticks quad channel for Intel cpus, dual sticks and single sticks. For amd I must avoid the quad sticks correct? Never had any amd in my life, it will be my first amd cpu!

I ve read something about 1700 and temperatures related, I will investigate it further. With my pc I do pretty much everything and lots of gaming. My school projects are not pc heavy stuff, except of Matlab and some light programming, word/excel/power point, environmental studies. But I am also a photographer and I upload/edit lots of raw files when I use my cameras.

No you don't need to avoid the four sticks. They will still run in dual channel mode :) Just don't use 1, or 3. For dual channel it's 2 or 4.

All of the CPUs are running very hot at the moment, not just the 1700. It's either a issue with the CPUs' readout or they are just very hot but the 1700 is no worse than the others.

So that may be fixed with a Bios.

Thank you all, all these days making some research, its hard to find motherboards and I am in a waiting list, I dont know why there is no motherboards in the market, only 3 models with x370 in the greek market. But I am up of buying the expensive ram and wait about a month for mobo and cpu. (there is no msi / ashrock mobos in my country yet) only 2 asus models and 1 gigabyte.

I dont buy Asus, I ve read that MSI motherboards doesnt do very well with amd and I am up for an ashrock mobo. It seems motherboard vendors are not ready for ryzen and they delay their mobos, who knows.

I like the looks of X370 Taichi I love the idea of black and white, the problem is the ram with ashrock mobos. I watched the qualified list of rams and they dont include the ones I want to buy! lol http://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/X370%20Taichi/index.asp#Memory

I want to buy corsair dimm xms4 kit 2x16gb CM32GX4M2B3200C16W, Ive read an AMD article that we have to avoid 3000-3300 and 3400mhz.

ps: as for case I finalized with Phanteks Enthoo pro
