Unlock fan speed on Gigabyte GTX 460

Hello,

I am currently having some heat issues with my Gigabyte GTX 460 sli configuration. I am running them at default clocks but definitely plan on overclocking, atleast to 800mhz core. In Furmark they hit 85-88C depending on ambient and card. Card 1 gets hotter than card 2 by a few degrees, usually 2-4. However, the fan only runs at 70%. Noise is not an issue for me, I have an Antec 1200 filled with fans, so thats not an issue. If my GPU-fans would run at 100% this issue would most likely be solved.

Is there a way to unlock the fan speed? Bios flash? Is there a way to flash the bios from windows? All I want is to fix this fan speed thing. I am running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise.

Thanks in advance! //Lindrian

85-88 isnt bad for the top card mate i was gettin that with a card under mines plus these cards are designed to be used up to 104 degree's C

i think so far the cards are all limited to 70% fan max but that will be fixed soon or you can flash the bios of the card and unlock the voltage tweak if your card doesnt have it so u can get great overclocks

Yeah well, it's still quite hot. If I overclock they hit 95-100C, and thats just way too hot. They will eventually crash if they run that hot.

Thats the issue, I can't really do any real overclocking of these awesome cards because they overheat, most likely due to the fan not spinning fast enough. They are running at stock speeds atm (715mhz) but I really want them to run at _atleast_ 800mhz.

mines was hittin about 88 under a gts250 while they both were folding away and the gts was about 66 degree's but i had a 915 core on mines

what card is it you have? mines is an msi cyclone and the 70% fan keeps mines just now on its own at a load of 55-58 and idle of 27

is your card not capable of doing 800 on stock volts? i managed to get 840 from stock

I have the Gigabyte GTX 260 1GB, in SLI. I get 35-38C on both cards in idle (40% fan).

It is capable of doing 800mhz at stock, but it gets too hot (furmark).

have you tried crankin up the fans on it? see how much of a difference that makes? i have 2 delta fans cabled tied to the side of my gpu's

I was thinking of doing somthing similar, like 90mm fans or something. The results I gave you were at 70% fan speed.

try crankin it up to 100% and see if they get better mate havin the deltas on mines dropped temps about 10+ degree's with one card my cards outta stock everywhere so i cant test 2 cards like this but i think it should be excellent

Buddy, this was the reason I even created the thread. The fans don't go higher than 70% due to a bios limitation.

i meant your case fans i presume there all going at 100%? if they are try and mount a fan like i have and see if that makes much difference

well try and run the intakes at 100% see what it does for temps if its good then u might be best to purchase good fans that give a lot of airflow and not a lot of noise

yes i would set all the case fans to 100% as the 1200 has alot of airflow.

have you tried MSI afterburner,to set a custom fan speed to heat ratio?

i doubt it will be locked its a new one to me if it is and the dual coolers on them should not be getting to 100c stock clocks

i would take them out and try them one at a time as you may have a bad card,id the heatsink secure?

Sorry if I have missed it, but did you create your own profile with MSI Afterburner?

Basically you can set the fan speeds to certain % when you hit certain temps. Since doing so with my 3870x2 (a ruddy hot git) it's never been over 58.

I know GPUs (especially Nvidias) are rated to over 100c but trust me when I say you don't want them over 80c, ever. Apparently the under 80c thing was the secret in keeping the 8800 high end cards alive.
