Ummmm, I need help with headphones XD

Ok so, I am going to be using the ASUS Xonar Essence STX as my sound card in my build. I was wondering, would I get the same Audio Surround by using the RAZER Carcharias with this High End sound card as I would with the RAZER Megalodon and its built in USB Soundcard. If not, what headset could I get to use in conjunction with the Essence STC to achive set audio quality?

No you will not get the same virtual surround as you would with digital. Digital Virtual surround actually sounds like surround, analogue virtual surround is pathetic. its very hollow sounding.

What i would recommend for starters is the Klipsch Image one headphones. They are only $150 and sound AMAZING! WAYYYY BETTER than ANY Razer headset. They are stereo headphones and because the STX uses virtual surround you could still give it a try with them. I use the Image one for a lot of audio production, and the sound quality is equal to that of my $250 Grado SR255i, absolutely amazing! And i would bet the bass is deeper than the Razer and it will obviously be cleaner.

Just to give you an idea of the bass. Imagine putting 2 12" subs and inch from each ear. Playing BFBC2 the bass is so enormous with the image one i have to turn it down. I makes my head hurt after a few minutes of play, and with NO distortion. The bass also isn't some gangster Bass BS. Its very clean.

Imho you should try and avoid 'gaming' audio gear like headphones, from experience they don't come close to a decent pair of sennheiser's.

If you are to use the Carcharias through the STX you would have to use analogue 3.5mm with a digital surround converter through the STX. Thus relying on software from the sound card to reproduce surround. Going from analogue to digital with this big of a leap generally never works right. Also you are forcing speakers that were not meant to simulate surround, that is what will give you a hollow sound. But my headphone option still stands. Klipsch image one headphones are great for gaming. The sound quality is so clear and crisp that you will still hear your enemies from behind you.[/font]

Otherwise I would get the beyerdynamic dt 990s( premium ones not the pro. they're about 300 euros). they're pretty much the best you can get i you want to do both competitive gaming and high end audio with the same headphones.

Otherwise I would get the beyerdynamic dt 990s( premium ones not the pro. they're about 300 euros). they're pretty much the best you can get i you want to do both competitive gaming and high end audio with the same headphones.

The Sennheiser 350 & 360s are very good. I have both of them. But for gaming i would say the Image one over both of them. The Bass on the image one is much deeper than the the 350 and the 360. This is mainly because Klipsch is known mainly for it's "Movie" sound.

But imo you should go for one which plays music the best, as long as it has surround it will still sound good.

Another note, any thing you suggest must be Circumaural in design, I only like to use headsets that fit over my ears.

Alright that makes sense. Before i make any suggestions on them, even though the Image ones are ON EAR, they are VERY lightweight and comfortable. They are by far some the the most comfortable headphones i have used.

If you need a headset with microphone, Sennheiser products are a great choice.

If you want a headset for gaming headphones, Beyerdynamic DT150 or DT880 are just fantastic, the best for the game. There are also very versatile and you have a very good sound for listening to songs.

Ok, quick change of plans. I need a headset for my new Alienware m18x, I need something that has 7.1 surround sound prebuilt into the headset sense I am no longer going to running on a high grade sound card. I was looking at the Razer Megalodon, what else is there?

If it has a digital S/PDIF output, any console-based headset (Turtle Beach, Astro, etc) will work. I got a Tritton headset, and it sounds amazing over the green stereo out on my PC. Music sounds way better now. The bass sounds awesome, esp. when I listen to Slayer.

I'm gonna buy myself a nice set when I go to Uni. Might just go for Klipsch again because I've had such good times with the Image S4's, might give Sennheisers a try too.
