need more info mate

What resolution are you gaming at?
Are you fussed about manufacture technologies, PhysX or TressFX?

Most important, whats the budget like?

R9 290 is the best choice

That's a very elegant explanation. Of why so many people are rocking nVidida cards in that price bracket. Lol, in general though nvidia cards are more refined and better built especially the reference cards, in general they run cooler and quieter and leave more room for over clocking but this of course comes at a price premium.

The choice is of course yours and it really depends on your priorities. If I was going AMD I would only consider the exceptionally large coolers such as the Sapphire Tri-X and not things such as the standard MSI card or the windforce3. My preference would be the MSI lightning in either the 780 or 290X.

290x or 780? Well thats easy. 290x. Could save a bit by going for a 290 though which is still more or less faster than a 780.

Nope, the real reason is not many people have the 290 is because they still seem to think that the non reference cooled cards are bad. 72c overclocked seems reasonable, no?

Then they think that 72C is hot.. which is funny because thats what most Nvidia cards run at and even with a reference cooler they run at 80C nearly the whole time.

The Sapphire 290x vapor x is £325 at dabs at the moment, I would say that is a contender no?

EDIT: thats the 290, my bad

Yeah yeah, AMD's can be cool with a big enough cooler I get that. I've had experience with both and personally choose to run nVidia cards. I wasn't siding with either but just trying to say the decision cannot be based entirely on '290X delivers more fps therefore buy'. Ultimately all components are 100% inefficient and the more power it consumes the more heat you have to get rid of. That's a total non-issue if you actually can get rid of it without making an excessive amount of noise, then it's just down to the cunning of the cooler manufacturer :).

Then explain why the Sapphire cards are the quietest coolers on the market even while cooling a 290/290x? There really is no comparison for what the OP is asking.. a 290x vs a 780. Well obviously a 290x is faster so thats the more wise option. He can afford the tri-x card so no harm in not getting it. I did advise him for a 290 earlier though over a 290x to save a tad bit of money but thats entirely up to him.

Besides with the price cuts they only become an even bigger no brainer over Nvidia alternatives. I don't see how you can justify spending more for less performance but gaining a few features that hardly anything uses anymore.

Funny fact. A 290/290x card's max allowed temperature is 105C AMD knows how to make some really good chips (since they don't melt that easily)

Between 290x and 780 I would go for the 290x. Since the 780 WILL NOT be getting full feature DX12 support
