Those little annoying F@H things ..

Power outage that lasted just long enough to kick off all the comps everything in the house is fine, so lost 10 hours on each of six machines:( QRB upon restart doesn't look nice:mad:

6 machines? Jesus. You should consider switching hardware. They musst pull so much from the wall. There are definitely better solutions to reach that PPD with less hardware or less wattage consumption at least...

These machines were put together over a period of time while never spending over 4 to 5 hundred dollars at a time, quite a different senario than dropping 4 thousand all at one time. Power cost isn't as bad as you would think as we are serverd by municipal power.

Two of my main machines have been having issues, got one up and running again. On the second one it looks like my Corsair 850 may be going away as soon as it is loaded by cards or CPU it BSOD's:(

Not quite sure what i've done to deserve this.

I have seen some poor SMP points from that WU, but nothing quite that bad.....

To clarify, that was with no other active applications open and with nothing sharing clock cycles etc.
It was like that for another 5 hours or so and then it spontaneously fixed itself and went up to a massive (!!!) 18k PPD.

Just as I think i'm beginning to understand FaH it throws me a curveball like this.

I'm finding these 101xx projects seem to be messin' up my PPD. Seem to take ages to crunch but the bonus points are no where near as good as some of the other wu's I've had....

Hi Guys,

I stopped folding on my Graphics card a while ago. The main reason being the extremely high temperatures. I put off doing anything about it for a while because of university commitments.

The temperatures were reaching 95 - 100 C, where in the past, the max used to plateau around the 85C~ mark depending on the WU. Recently I had a chance to replace the TIM, which I did (a total of 3 times). The first two attempts had no affect on the temperature, but on the third attempt the temps reduced by around 10 C. I guess I used too much TIM on the first two attempts.

With the reduction in temperature I ran some benchmarks and gamed for a while with the temperature staying below 75 C, then all of a sudden when I started folding again, the temperature shot up. I'm not sure what to do at this point as the TIM replacement was only a temporary fix. I am using as5, but I have a tube of MX-4. Should I use the MX-4 and see what happens?

Thanks

It's not any in particular. The temps were fine for a bit after re-applying tim, but they increased again after about 5 days. It could be that I'm applying too less or too much tim. I used a bit more than a pea-sized blob. It's a non-reference 580.

If I was applying TIM to a GPU I would use the spread method, rather than put a pea size on there and let the pressure spread it out. I have used both as5 & mx4. as5 has a burn in period, while mx4 doesn't. But between the two I don't think you'll get the dramatic temp drop that you're looking for. Is there anyway that you can reduce the voltage or dial back the core speed to reduce the temp?

I think the break in period is 200 hours for as5. I waited longer than that and the temps did not improve one bit. I'll try the spread method with MX-4 and see where that takes me.

If that doesn't work as I'd like, I'll lower the voltage and/or dial back the core speed.

Thanks

Just an update: The temps are fine now. They're stable on 85 C, which is similar to what I used to get before on the more intensive WU's

Gonna Re-tim if they go above 90 C

I will have a drop in PPD for awhile. Had to stop folding on a couple machines for now. I just bought a new house and still have my old one. Hopefully I won't have two mortgages for too long, but until then I gotta save money where I can.

Bummer, at this rate we'll have no big hitters left...

Hurry back soon dude.

Hoping only for a month. We need to see how things settle down with our finances.

On another note, I finally have my desk out of storage and have soo much lovely room. It's absolutely amazing. Really can't wait to get networking the house and setting it up how I want it. We went from roughly 1200 sq ft to a little over 3700.

This is actually my first real shutdown since January 2008. That's 5 years of folding. My PPD wont' reach 0, but probably level off around 50k. It will definitely pick back up though. Really wanted to give the heads up so people didn't think I stopped altogether. Folding is still a priority for me and I will be back at 100% again. You guys will have to pick up the slack for me!
