The White Elephant

Hello all,

okay a couple of more goodies have arrived today so will get these in as soon as possible.

I have Windows 7 on its way and then just left with the FINAL purchase of the GPU so unfortunately Andrevautour my system isnt up and running yet just need the GPU and then hopefully sorted I cant wait to be honest but I have to watch my funds cause this little baby is a bank breaker !! :o

but i knew that when I got into this build.

Already thinking of the next build as this baby tips more towards a bit of a workstation. But for the next rig I want an all out dedicated gaming machine for home maybe a 2600K with a good dose of overclocking !

I will of course do my research but I really would like the best balance of power and cost ............ as in keep COSTS DOWN:p as always all advice is welcome, BUT will get into this in due time.

KANEY
Just for gaming? Get an 3570k. :)
OT: this build is coming along nicely, and I love the Dominator Platinum DIMMs. What the average forum-member would say here: Ooooooh Shinies! ;)

Shinies indeed !!

Just fitted these little buggers in and they do look great, I can only imagine at the moment what this will look like with all the banks full of shinies ......... LOVELY !

As it goes I have seen lots of very nice builds carrying a 3570K, i will have a poke about me thinks :) thanks AverageNinja.

The Platinums look amazing in your rig :D
Only when all the slots are filled I think you wont be able to notice the LEDs anymore :P

A very good point, and one that I am prepared to put to the test, but I will have to rob a bank first

Desperate to finish my 'WhiteElephant' build off as soon as possible, need the GPU.

Asus Extreme A2 error message ?

?? PLEASE HELP if you have any Ideas folks, please let me know what I am doing wrong ??

FINALLY got my GPU, MSI Power Edition 670.

So my build is pretty much complete bar cable tidy and other odds and sods BUT it will not boot up or see my SSD to install Windows 7 - 64bit??
I dont seem to have no video whatsoever ?

All I am getting is an A2 error message from the mobo about the IDE detect ?

I have removed ram reseated the CPU, disconnected on board audio, different monitors and tried the GPU in all the other PCI express slots and still nothing ?

Please let me know what you think ?

Many thanks, KANEY

Thanks BlacknTan,

Until I can get this baby to boot and solve the A2 error .

It really is The White Elephant !!

Hi y786,

i do as it goes but this build is all at work, so have put the card in ready to try first thing in the morning !

I have tried everything apart from an RMA !! but really would like to fix the A2 issue and stick with this rig build. Reading loads of other A2 problems on here and all of them are simple fixes like the ram sticks, or other PCIE slots i have tried the lot, apart from a second GPU card that is. I think it is my VGA adaptor for my monitor !? So the bios is probably there but my screen stays black, my monitor will not auto detect whatever mode i am in so need to check that out too.

Does the 4-pin power in the corner need to be plugged in? I see its not plugged in on your pics above. Also, doesn't the Asus have a way to flash the Bios without any components on the board? Maybe flashing the latest bios to the board will help it boot.

Cracked it !!!

Hi epeets, and all with your help comments

thanks for your input, but i have cracked it, lots of research online and where loads of people have had similar issues with an 'A2 error message from the mobo about the IDE detect.'

I have literally tried everything the ram, cables, reseating the CPU, PSU, connections on everything and nothing still A2 error ???????

Until I managed to swap out the monitor, I was using an oldish monitor but it did not register with my GPU ? I plugged into and newer version and hey presto she posted recognised all of my peripherals and boom of she went installed Windows7 ran all the system updates and MSI updates and it is rapid, very happy !

I Did manage to get MODO installed today for 3D rendering ran a few benchmark tests and it absolutely destroys our custom built PC in the studio specifically designed for 3D rendering, my new build is a speedy beast, all still at stock but will OC the CPU and GPU respectively a steady 24/7 setup but will give just a little bit more oomph !! :)

I will now sort out and tidy up the cables to make it look respectable and take some beauty shots of the final build, I am sure its all normal stuff to the pros on here but for me I am very chuffed with my rig, first build but all in all it went pretty well ! Now Skyrim and BF3 :downit:

KANEY.

Hi All,

Been a while since my last update but have been studio bound busy !!

My previous update got my hands on the GPU finally and could not for the love of god get my new rig to post anyway attached a newer monitor and hey presto all good.

Anyway just got my hands on these little beauties for some decent input on gaming and general work, they may not be the best but they are pretty damn good ! Just thought I would share with you guys and gals.

Next more RAM more SSDs and a must on the cable tidying !

keep you posted, Kaney

Great specs you have there. Really high end system! You mentioned rendering? Have you ran Cinebench yet?

My dad has a Rampage 4 / 3930k system and it gets about 13.14, is that about what your system gets?

Also 3D mark:

This system has 2 GTX580s in SLI and 16GB 2133 ram, so similar to yours.

Hi Andrevautour,

Thanks dude, It is a great system I bloody love it but all still very new to me so I am still learning bios settings/OC etc, I need to setup my RAM properly to get this at its optimum setting of upto 2133mhz !? I need to research how to do this.

I have not yet run CINEBENCH but will tomorrow when I get back into work just to see what comes out of this new rig.

Just to give you some background I built this system to outgun a 3D rig that work commissioned for the studio, very expensive and basically shite! Our 3D weapon of choice is now MODO, on the dedicated 3D rig we produced a 3D model with movie like animations revolving 360º with also camera movement for a luxury nordic chocolate box this took 6hours50minutes to render about A3 in size at 1080p quality, with this now new rig this same setup of movie no changes just a complete re-render took 3hours30minutes which was bloody awesome we thought, i think with some more tuning like the RAM that I mentioned earlier we may get this time down a bit further, its worth a tinker !! !?

As maybe a treat for christmas I am seriously considering another MSI GTX670 OC just to absolutely blitz it on the overkill ratings ! :p :intelwar:

A recent steam purchase was 3DMARK 11 and have achieved an overall score of 9600+ not too bad but again a few tweaks here and there I may eek out a little bit more without burning anything out !?!?!

I will also check out 3DMark Vantage and share my scores.

lots more setup to do so will definitely keep you posted :)

KANEY.

If you have ram that is rated for 2133, the you just set it it 2133mhz in the bios and it should run fine like that.

Certainly another 670 won't hurt if you are going to be doing a lot of heavy gaming or 3D gaming/gaming on a high res monitor.

It is fairly well documented that you can get 4.6ghz fairly easily out of most of the 3930k's as long as you have a decent cooler on it--if you're not too sure about the voltages and such Id recommend watching Tom's review of the 3930k and 3960x, he will likely talk about overclocking them and give you a rough idea of the kind of volts you will need for that. I would say it would be about 1.35 -1.4V. If the system will be used for a lot of rendering and Cpu intensive stuff then a healthy overclock on the processor will greatly improve the overall performance and reduce render times but a substantial amount, so I would recommend that.

I'd be curious, do you have an idea of the kind of specs that the 3d rig has? and how old it is roughly?

So if it took about 3h 30m to render with the processor at stock (which turbos up to 3.8ghz) then it would likely be closer to 2h 45m with the processor at 4.6ghz, just to give you a rough guess. Setting up the ram should not be a problem, as I said you just select the speed in the bios. Im not sure if you've checked in CPUz or not but it's likely that it auto set itself to the right speed, but it's also possible that it defaulted to 1600Mhz, and then you will have to set it to 2133mhz in the BIOs.

Here is the 3dmark11 score on out system

Just to give you an idea of what is possible with the 3930K (but not recommended)

It CAN do 5Ghz, but with quite high volts.

See Tom's review of the 3930K--page 2 covers overclocking: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/intel_core_i7-3930k_review/2

Note--this is just for benchmarking and only for a short time, I would not advise anything over a 4.6Ghz as a 24/7 overclock on the 3930K. I believe you should be able to get 4.6 with about 1.35-1.37V.

Hi Andrevautour,

thanks for he info dude great help for me, I will today get a Cinebench test done and look into CPU-Z I havnt done this yet, I will also get into the bios and tinker with a few setting nothing toooooo mad but run with a few points that you have given me and see what I can get out of my 3930K and I must beef up the RAM !!

Will hopefully share some spec later today !!
