And suddenly I have an incentive to upgrade

You are definitely going to need good hardware :D
They said recently that they wouldn't have been able to do the game on the 360 and PS3 because they wouldn't have been able to handle it.
They also said recently that they have come close to maxing out the PS4 and Xbox One's capabilities on the console version with it.

Every big console game will use around 95% of the CPU/GPU easily. Its not hard to load it up. Its the memory management thats a pain in the ass for any platform. If they can utilize the available ram and cache's available to near 100% then i would be impressed that they did this that quickly. In the future they will find better ways to use the same amount and ultimately use less for more, so that should help too.

I completed The Witcher 2 quite recently so I'm up to date with the story :D. The Witcher 3 won't be out for a while (Q4) according to rumours, so it'll be quite a wait if the rumours are anything to go by. I don't mind waiting as long as the game is rock solid when it's out.

The latest screenshots show just how much the graphics have improved when compared to the Witcher 2.

Judging by the graphics I think a lot of people will be struggling to max it out. Ubersampling is a real FPS killer on the Witcher 2, so I'm hoping they've made some major improvements to it for the Witcher 3.

The visual differences are negligible with it enabled on the Witcher 2, so not a big deal.

I haven't tested Witcher 2, I will try it over the next few days

I would definitely recommend playing it before you try the third installment. If you play on Dark Mode, you're looking at 35 - 50 hours of game play (this includes all side quests). There are also 2 possible paths you can follow in terms of story so you're looking at quite a significant amount of game play time.
