The Ultimate case

Interesting design

Is the case going to house one pc using the parts you've mentioned or multiple rigs like a server and a gaming rig?

Btw that's some good skills you have there with the metal mate

The progression of the build is awesome so far.

I'm definitely following this build, its going to be epic, keep up the good work and cant wait for more pics

the case is being designed to house my main computer which i use for pretty much everything from basic email and web surfing to high end gaming and a second system. the second system will be my partners desktop but when we move into our bigger place i will be adding a third rig into the case (with some minor adjustments) so stream music into various rooms throughout the flat/house w/e lol

niceee, keep the updates coming

This is a complex yet at the same time fun project your undertaking. Good luck to you and can't wait to see it when it's finished.

might seem complex but once all the peice sizes are sorted out and panels are cut/shapped it'll pretty much only go together one way.

but the amount of extra cables involved. im looking at 41 extra cables so far

You actually plan to MOVE it?

LOL I bust a gut lifting my bitfenix colossus

haha yeah, a 7ft x 2ft x 2ft its a big old case. and this building has narrow stair cases so had to allow for dismantling to get it out. didnt fancy taking the windows out to get the case out of the apartment lol

woot! bout effin time!

should be getting the metal delivered either tomorow or friday!!!!

also been looking into motorising the motherboard trays and front panels so the case will open electronically.

this feature MIGHT be expanded in the future with remote control unit.

Sounds very cool. XD

going to order in the bits to make the top tray electrically open on the 20th.

the idea is that theres T bar running across the bottom of the tray so im going to put some M8 tapped holes in the T bar and insert a threaded rod through it. the rod is then attatched to a high torque 35rpm 12v motor which is wired into a on-off-on switch. the switch has one on possition wired for reverse polarity.

going to order in the bits n bobs and the motor on the 20th. but im a little skeptical of the motor. going to be try n hope.

anyways, will update when i have something to report on lol

UPDATE 23-12-2011

psu assembly added to the main framework and my test supply placed on

an overall image of the main framework as it stands at the moment. the psu and front panel assemblies have been mounted to the main framework already to check things over.

so i spent 4 hours working on the rest of the outter main framework.

this is how it shaped up.

metal for the motherboard trays. 2mm thick aluminium and 1mm thick front panel sheet

certainly gives you a feel for its size.

motherboard tray sliding

haha thanks.

jst did a little work on the mobo trays, turns out i dont have the right size drill bit to force the motherboard standsoffs to thread the aluminium themselfs.

cause its 6/32 threads on the sheets. awkward effin things lol

WOW

That is a huge case and a fantastic idea. To hell with practicalities and the "norm".

"If you build it they will come"

It's going to be worth a fortune when it's finished with the amount of copper and ally it will have in it you'll have to make sure local scallies don't nick it for the scrap value alone.

Would love to see some renders/impressions of what the outside will look like, will it be ally or acrylic or a bit of a mix.

Also if it's big (which it is) will components be far apart? by that I mean will you need to lengthen the cables from your PSU? If you do you might want to think a bit about potential for voltage drop as resistance increases with length of conductor.

I would however be a bit worried about it's ability to support its own weight as the gear states to go in

Best of luck with it and keep the updates coming.

heres the idea its all based on. the design too.

just a little mroe complicated

all cables are extended but not by too much to voltage drop isnt to bad.
