The ghetto rig! (just for fun)

Ok so... I thought it would be fun to put together a very cheap PC based around whatever bits I have lying around, the Pentium g3258, and an extremely cheap mobo - then overclock the living cack out of it :D

So far I have 4gb RAM, an old power supply, an old CD writer and this case.

Have already tested the output from the PSU with an oscilloscope and a dummy load and it's pretty bang on with voltages etc - but it's so old it doesn't have SATA connectors - but no problem - I'll solder some on :D

Look at the posh rig in the background looking down on it, with all its Devil's Canyon and Big Kepler goodness :( but when the little PC is matching it thread for thread it might not act so high and mighty ^_^

Thread to be updated as and when new parts come :)

Watched a youtube overclock comparison between the G3258 and 4770K in gaming and they are on par core for core clock for clock, but fail when it comes to productivity.

Okay guys so - a little update already - I went rummaging and found a couple of old laptop drives

On the top is a Seagate 7200rpm 320GB drive, and on the bottom is a 60GB OCZ SSD. Now normally, I would rather drink my own piss than use OCZ stuff, but this is a ghetto rig and you don't get much more ghetto than OCZ :D

Now mounted in the case (need to find another couple of screws for it tho)

Just bought this Gigabyte H81 motherboard for £17.50 inc delivery (after applying a couple of nectar vouchers I had on eBay). The board in my main PC is Gigabyte and I am mostly very happy with it (except for some BIOS menu oddness). Looking forward to it arriving... Still stalking the CPU :)

Motherboard has arrived! It looks and feels every bit as solid as my Z87 board.

Have just scored the CPU for £39 on ebay. Can't wait for it to come =00= should then have a working system. Gonna see how fast I can push the integrated graphics as well as the core speed, before getting a dGPU.

There has never been a better time to join the PC master race. Partly I'm doing this to show to friends that they can spend about the same as they would on a console but end up with something infinitely better.

So the CPU came. My board will only go to 1.2v but 4.2ghz is not bad on that voltage eh? And this is one cool running chip - even on full load it doesn't hit 70 deg on the stock cooler.

I'll be raffling this off for charideee once I've finished playing with it :) going to see if I can edit the BIOS file to allow a higher voltage.

How did you get on soldering the SATA power cables?

Given it's only 12V, 5V and Gnd you need it's easy enough to cannibalize a Molex connector or something, although you might run into problems if there's a hard drive that needs 3.3V, you'd have to do something to the main ATX connector then, but they're extremely rare nowadays.

Been a while since I visited this thread!

Yep, that's what I did, even opened the PSU up and removed the surplus wires for floppy etc from the bus bars (DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME PLEASE KIDS!!!)

The end result is actually not ghetto at all, it's a very smart, quick, usable little system and coming up to Christmas it'll be raffled off in aid of Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure

http://www.bradforddisabilitysports.co.uk/

Basically, it's a charity that provides sporting opportunities for disabled kids and adults in Bradford. I've had the privilege of helping my boss fund-raise for for a few years now - he's been mad enough to cycle to Germany and back a couple of times in aid of the charity - I'd rather sit at home and work on cars and build computers to raffle off :D

Pictures of the inside/outside to come soooooon :)
