System Spec Advice for a newbie!

The waite is 1261 gram, even with a backplate i think its alot of wait.

But yeah, its a great cooler, with ugly fans ( 1x120mm 1x140mm ), in my eys.

Aye, I'm not a fan (har har :p) of the Noctua colour scheme, but as shown here (for NF-P12's though I assume most Noctua fans would be similar if not the same) it's not really much of an issue if you want to change the colour to match the scheme of your internals.

Thanks for all your help!! Gone for the NH-D14, optical - AD-7241S-0B Sony Optiarc and CH10LS20.AUAR10B - LG CH10LS20.AUAR 10x Blu-Ray Reader.

With regard to the CPU paste am I ok to use the one given in the NH-D14? (long time since I built a PC! dont remeber using any paste!!)

The NH-D14 is an amazing cooler. I have one in my CM690 case and it fits perfectly. (See my rig gallery on that one :P)

Hi All,

Thanks for your help. All my components are slowly arriving through the post! But my question related to the thermal paste hasnt been answered, is the NH H1 paste that comes with the NH D14 good enough? I have been doing some research and it has got some good reviews!! :)

Any points on best way to apply the paste???

Cheers

Oh yea the TP is a great paste. I personally used AS5 but am thinking about re-applying with the Noctua paste to see if there is a difference.

Also you should do a single horizontal line in the middle of the processor. Make it very very thin and you'll be good. You don't need a whole lot. I put about a 1-2cm line on my and it was a tad too much.

Im using the Noctua paste on my own rig tbh. Much easier to use than MX3. Would be my prefered choice atm tbh

Hey,

I am installing the Saphire 5870 and it has an 8 PIN PSU connection and a 6 PIN PSU Connection. I have a splitter - not too sure if thats the right word, it splits a 8 PIN connection to the graphics card into two so u can connect that to the PSU (two connectors to the PSU and one to the 8 PIN on the Graphics Card). Should I be using that?

Or am I OK to connect the PSU directlt to the 8 PIN and the 6 PIN on the graphics card.

Hope that makes sense!

Leo

When you say a "splitter" is it one of those horrible 2 x Molex to 1 x 8-pin PCI connectors? If so, I personally wouldn't recommend using it as it seems more a bodge than anything, though they're horrifyingly common accessories with most graphics cards these days. A good quality power supply should always come with multiple PCI 8 pin (or 6+2 pin) as well as 6 pin PCI cables for your graphics cards.

Hi,

I think thats what is it - it has 8 pins to connect to the grpahics card. Then it has two connectors which have three pins (plus one missing pin) to connect to the PSU.

In any case, I need to connect this saphire card to the PSU and it has two slots one 8 pin and one 6 pin. The corsair (HX850W) i have has connections for both. Do I need to connect to both of them?

Also, I am bit confused about powering my motherboard (GA-X58A-UD5). It has two connections on it. a 8 pin and and a 24 pin. I know (well think) i need to connect power to the 24 pin but do I also need to add a connection to the 8 pin as well?

Hope that make sense!

Cheers,

Leo

Yeah you have to connect both 6 and 8 pin for the graphics card to get enough power, otherwise it might not function at all, even at idle. Try to avoid using that nasty 2 x Molex to 1 x 8 pin though.

And, yes you also have to connect an 8 pin to the motherboard to help power the CPU, which after a quick glance at my own HX850W, is hard-wired into the PSU and has no marking on it to define its purpose, though it can be pulled apart to make a 4 pin connection for older or less power hungry components. This is your 8 pin EPS12V connection for the CPU.

The 24 pin one is pretty obvious where that goes :p

Hope that helps dude. Just shout if you need more info.

Thanks for your help.

I am connecting the front fan of the atcs and it wont reach the fan connector on the mptherboard (well there is one but it is being used). It has a molex thing (i think thats what it is called) that i can connect to the PSU. It has two endings on it. Do I need to connect both of them to the PSU to power it?

Also, re: the other fans. I have different ports on the motherbaord and I have just connected thme to the nearest one. that cool? Obviously the CPU one i have attached to the CPU fan.

Also, I have used both of the USB connections on the motherboard. Is there away i can split one of them. I need one more connection. The manual talks about a bridge?

Thanks,

Leo

Just found out that the connection from the fan with the molex thing to connect to the PSU is a female and a male. Therefore, I only need to connect one of them? Agree?

yep just plug the power suply molex into the fans molex that it fits in, the other end is you can daisy chain fans if you need to,

Hi,

thanks for that

Any points on the following:

Also, I have used both of the USB connections on the motherboard. Is there away i can split one of them. I need one more connection. The manual talks about a bridge?

Also, the atcs has some leads for HDD lights etc. The M/B has positive and negative terminals so not too sure which way to connect them? Any advice?

cheers,

Leo

If you want to save a few bucks on the motherboard the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R is a great board for a lower cost. I have that board and a I7 930 and 4ghz is no problem.

PSU = CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX all the power you will need at a good price

Video card = Gigabyte HD5870 has factory OC and a nice dual fan cooler

Memory = CORSAIR XMS3 6GB Model CMX6GX3M3C1600C7 ddr1600 cas7 for a lower price than some of the fancy stuff

CPU = I7 930 just a little bit more money and you get a little bit faster cpu

All that should set you back about £850-900, that will leave you with a little bit of extra cash or you could pick up a new case, some games or a big hard drive.

I've loved my Ultra X3 1600w PSU it's a great deal- plus life time warranty. I've even put the warranty to the test, and they've always been great. It comes with a regular cord which takes it down to 1300w, and the uber cord for 1600w (but you need to have a 220 outlet).

Tbh to get the overclocking you want to do and to save u cash and heat... id go Asus EAH5870 V2 Voltage tweak. They sell for £306-£318 on multiple uk sites. and the reviews speak for themselves.
