SX UK Server Test

Guys,

EWA want to play on the SX server if possible, but i'm not sure if its up to 10 players (its a bit low spec'd) - I've dropped the tickrate to ease the strain on it a bit, but i'd really like it if we could all go on there (maybe tonight?) and see if it can hold 10 people.

Will everyone be around tonight at say 10pm? (bring friends with you if you can).

128K uplink = 2 players for CS:S

256k uplink = 4 players for CS:S

320k uplink = 6 players for CS:S

512k uplink = 9 players for CS:S

768k uplink = 14 players for CS:S

1024k uplink = 19 players for CS:S

1140k uplink = 21 players for CS:S

1708k uplink = 32 players for CS:S

Its more the hardware i'm worried about :(

It's your upload I'm worried about, because if I am correct in thinking you have a 512k upload then you can only host 9 people.

The minimum specs are 2GHz and 512MB of RAM apparently although I've seen srcds run on 550MHz comps with 256MB of RAM.

I've got 1mb Up / 4mb Down at present, but its bonded so i'm not sure if that affects things at all.

The server is an overclocked celeron running @ 3ghz with 512mb ram, but its not deditcated to source (it has other chours too).

The most ram I've seen srcds use on my system is 50MB, I can quite happily fold also while the server is up. A Celeron at 3GHz should be fine holding 10 players, even if it has other stuff to do.

If it can't hold 10 players when you go test it I'll be amazed!

On linux it actually uses a LOT more than that.

Also don't forget about disk access speed. With other applications running as well, it could easily need to use swap file which would be dawg slow.

Linux uses.. more?

Last time i looked it was using about 150mb, and not only that but it appears to have a memory leak too - as the server needs to be restarted on a weekly basis.

Damn that's alot of RAM it uses! Memory leak? Maybe you should use Windows LOL

Its coming back into consideration - but mainly because its 10x easier to administer source on Windows.

Fuck I hate windows source administration...

I should be on around 10:15ish to test it out if yall are still around.

If thats 10:15 GMT then i'll be around ;)

Windows source admin may suck, but believe me, its still easier than having to login to a linux box, find the right screen, and remember the stupid command to turn something like FF on :D

Yeah I suppose... I used to run a cs 1.6 rented dedicated server for my digital paintball team and it was all linux based and I got pretty good at whipping around in there and changing all the sets. Figured CS:S couldn't be too much different from 1.6 as far as game option commands go.
