Ssd?

Hi guys, i am thinking of buying a SSD. Is it really worth it? I want to use it mainly for Windows and 3D modeling programs (such as 3ds max and lumion). I own an old HDD, will upgrading to SSD help with speeds? Now something else, i heard SSDs have a short span of life,is it really true? Last but not least, i am between Crucial and KIngston brands, which one is more reliable at low cost hard drives? Thanks for the help beforehand! :)

Budget?

SSDs do not have short life spans. They are shorter than HDDs but can still last years. If you do consistent writing to a SSD it will wear down and die faster. Larger drives die slower.

SLC=Single Layer Cell- last the longest. Also the fastest
MLC=Multi-layer Cell- Most common nand used. Great speed and Last long
TLC=Triple Layer Cell- Last the shortest and also not the fastest. Cheaper but very few companies use them. Only massproduced ones are Samsung.

All in all MLC will do you fine. Unless you write to the drive A LOT then any SSD is not a great option and HDDs are better for that. You could use a SSD for a boot drive to put windows on and have a HDD for storage.

Just remembered Seagate have just released SHDD. Basically has some Nand for cache and HDD for storage. Has best of both worlds while being cheaper but slower than a pure SSD. It's in between the two.

I have been using a Samsung 840 pro 256GB for half a year now and I can say I felt a huge difference in system startup and application loading times. Its an MLC nand flash drive and if I'm not mistaken Samsung estimates 10GB of writes per day for 14 years ( thats about 50TB ). So longevity isn't an issue for me. In 6 months mine has only made 1.35TB of writes.
For mass storage and games I use a 1TB HDD.

Either go with SSD+HDD or an SSHD from seagate if you don't want 2 separate drives.

You mean SSHD.

Are you dead set on getting one new?
Sata3 SSDs have hit sort of their maximum, so even older drives from last year perform almost as good.
I have an OCZ Agility 3 60gb for a boot drive; even though it maxes out writes at 250-300 mbps, it reads at 500, so is perfect for its purpose.
And so long as you use it just for the OS and drivers and whatnot, it should last as long as you need it to, as you're not writing to it.

Hope that helps

Mainly low budget, just to add some more life time to my system and go through my graduation project, for which i need 3ds max and lumion, so it is more for boot driver and 5-6 programs,so i suppose an 60 gb one will be just perfect. Anyway my motherboard has only sata 2,and after buying a new pc, some months from now, i will give this one to my bro, so there are not great demands from this pc... I think i will go for the Kingston 60 GB sata 3 one,and if needed in the future, will move to the new pc ;) Thank you all!! You were really helpful, i was about to not buy one,but now i am sure it will make the use of my pc less painful! :P

I would advise against this.. That 60gb SSD will be at it's capacity limits which in turns will utterly slow down the drive and die far faster than it should... Go for a minimum of a 90gb ssd or better yet a 120gb ssd..

Keep in mind Win7/8 takes up about 17-20gb leaving you only with 43-40gb usable. I'm sure with the programs you are talking about they will eat that up quick..

Would go for a 120 or 250 Gb Evo 840 from Samsung. They got good speeds, useful software, and are not too expensive.

Otherwise, if you want to stick to the Crucial choice, the m500.

Just know that switching from HDD > SSD will grant you the biggest speed change in an eldering computer. No piece of hardware has such a dramatic influence, so go for it.

I think you are both absolutely right, but i am on strict budget and i have a dying gpu and in 2-4 weeks need to gather some more money to upgrade... :/ I will definitely go for 250 gb when i will build my new pc,after getting paid from my practice exercise,in half a year or so... Dont you think a 60 gb will do me fine for only windows, 3ds and lumion, which are almost 30 gb at all?...i will write nth else on the ssd and will use mostly if not for all purposes me hdd,i guess it will be sufficient. What do you think?

bare in mind you *MUST* have 10~15% of an SSD left as free space or you will actually start to massively degrade it.

Didnt know that, anyway still will manage...50 gb is more than enough for my needs right now and for the near future, off to getting it and collecting for gpu.. Thank you all guys, you were really helpful!

You will have less than 50gb.. the drive will have around 54gb usable than add in windows which is about 20gb.. 34gb left after mate.. nothing in todays age for modern software.

Got it, and i have to say only one thing...it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!! You are right, i have 20 gb left now,but it is more than enough for me though! Thanks all anyway!

May be the case for you but that drive will not last very long due to it being filled up so much. Will very rapidly. Enjoy the speed though!

I got a Crucial 64GB SSD couple of months ago and.... wow what a difference! I only have Windows & Photoshop on there and everything else goes to my WD HDD (D:\) once I striped all the unused crap from windows and applied only the updates I required and set up the defrag, restore and temp files to use D:\ as well as disabling virtual memory and ensure that TRIM is enabled I have 42GB free I know I'll have a healthy drive for a long time :)

Although I know WEI is only for show but it's just nice to look at for the 7.5 Score. From a crap 5.2 before.

I hope you realize you never defrag an ssd... Just to make sure you know:)
